Chiricahua Trio of Babies

pyromaniac Nov 18, 2010 07:57 PM

Chiricahua male. 8.7 grams

Chiricahua female # 1. 7.1 grams

Chiricahua female # 2. 9.5 grams

These pictures are from right out of the shipping box for their weigh-ins and identification photos. Tomorrow I'll offer food.

From Troy Hibbitts. I credit John Lassiter (or blame him! LOL!) for my acquisition of these three sweet little creatures.

Thanks! I don't think you can go wrong with pyros. They are hardy, calm, and eye candy in the extreme.

Yea it's all JL's fault you have that empty tank syndrome. LOL

Another batch of real little gems. That puts you at 5 Chiricahuas with the pair you got from Gerold?

The new baby tubs. These are my hatchling grow out tubs for my crickets, but with UTH's installed make great baby snake tubs. I am saving my empty tanks for my older brumating pyros.

I also have four older pyros from another breeder, that the ancestors were collected in the Chiricahuas. In fact I have only three pyros who are unknown locale. All together I have 14 pyros. Am hoping next spring to have my own babies! They wont be the Chiricahua locale ones though, but Zunchara and Mazar, who are big enough to breed now.

Zunchara and Mazar in brumation, along with Dotz, who has Chiricahua lineage. Dotz is big enough, too, but Mazar is the only male big enough to do the job. In the photo Mazar is near the bottom of the picture and Zunchara is near the top, with
Dotz in the tub, just her head peaking out.

Those are pretty fine looking pyros. I like the extreme difference in pattern between Mazar and Zunchara. It will be interesting to see what the babies look like. I'm sure you're excited about the possibilities.

So 11 of 14 are Chiricahuas, not bad. I only have the 2.6 non locality I got from Mike Russo and am just glad they are all real pretty and finally eating. I will probably add more pyros next year. They are by far my favorite kingsnakes. Right now I'm finacially commited to a pair of YT Cribos which put a real hurt on my wallet. LOL

Some don't care for it, but that consistent high black crossover thing is really attractive to my eyes. Beautiful snake too...

Here is a Tulare County zonata with the same effect...

What a splendid zonata! My friend was hiking in Yosemite this summer and he saw a black and white snake with a little red on the sides on the trail near Half Dome (his description; he is not into snakes) but he was afraid to pick it up! Argh! If only I had been there!

Zuni, one of my '90 pyros as a baby.

All things having to do with fire...Prometheus was considered as an avatar but he had some serious issues with Zeus and an eagle so I passed on that one.

Also, Great Balls Of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis was one of my all time favorite songs when I was a kid.

Once again I thank you for giving me a heads up on Troy's pyros. When I saw he had reduced them to only $35 that did it. He might have a couple left; you should check it out! LOL!

Last night I fed the three new babies and they all ate a live pink. The littlest female ate first, then the male, then the bigger female. A little lizard tea for the girls and a bit of pinky blood for the boy worked great. Once a new baby eats for me I feel it really is mine!

A side note on habitats and hides: I have been using small terra cotta saucers as hides. I put one saucer over the UTH, and another larger one over that, to make sort of a terra cotta sandwich, which is like a rock crevice. The babies like to get between the saucers and the bottom saucer holds the heat nicely. The pyros like the feel of stone on their bodies.

Terra Cotta is great since it actually absorbs moisture and holds it creating needed humidity.....
Stack some more on top of those two and you have in essence a Retes Rack that provides a thermal gradient from bottom to top and not just from front to back of your enclosure.......

Glad they are doing good for you....

Thanks for the Retes Rack idea! Some of them already have three saucers. I will buy some more saucers and stack them as you suggest.

Yes, that is an excellent idea for them to be able to choose the exact temp gradient/hide crevice at any given time.

Similar to Jerry Kruse's stacked ceramic tiles with thin spacers in between.

A temp gradient "condo"..LOL!

This stacked thing also makes good use of the vertical space in a tank, which generally just goes to waste.

Very Nice!

I like the black between the bands. It makes them look great. Better looking even in real life than the photo honestly! I've noticed you've developed quite a pyro collection =)

Thanks!

Zeke, the little male, shed this tiny skin yesterday. Silver dollar for size reference. He probably looks much brighter now so in a few days I will take his photo again.
