I've never even seen a Freedom Breeder but I'm getting more and more convinced that some of my balls need hides even in my closed rack system. I'm wondering if the feeding problems some have had with some individuals in piebald lines might be due to excessive shyness and a need for a hide. My main problem is finding a good hide that will fit in a sweeter box. However, you might give it a try just to see if it helps the ones that don't seem to want to eat.
My het pieds have newspaper and hide and sometimes will not eat a gerbil!!!!

I guess if it where as simple as throwing in a hide someone would have figured it out by now. Unfortunate that some of them are that way. At least you have the other pair of hets and some pied babies.
Three of my 25% chance het pied girls went off food early this spring and started eating again when I put hides in (kind of doubt any of them are hets though). However, the biggest that was a great rat eater now only wants mice. Fortunately she’ll eat 3 or 4 at a time so I still just managed to get her to 1,500 grams. Her two “little” sisters have about caught her eating rats. They have all outgrown the clay pots I found that will fit in my sweeter boxes so I need to find something different as a lot of snake sticks out now.
I give each of my snakes a hide box....its a stress reducer for them and i have noticed much better feeding responses from animals with boxes........Balls like to cram themselves in the tightest possible place to hide so giving them something to get themselves into inside the freedom breeder is not a bad idea...
