hey Dan,
The mother was wild caught in Northeast Alabama. She was gravid when she was caught. She was also melanistic. He let her go after she laid. I think five or six eggs hatched and I was given this beauty.
Only problem is, it was rather late in the season and I don't have anything to scent pinkies with.
I have just been sticking a pinkie in her mouth and after I get it about half way in she will usually go ahead and swallow it.
Do melanistic hogs grow to be black or do they start out black?
It seems her belly is getting darker but I have no idea if that is normal.
I keep corns and rat snakes but couldn't pass this up when offered...
any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

Jimmy,
I dont know for sure, but I'm pretty sure melanistic easterns start out patterned & turn black. I can send you a dead frog & toad or 2 if you'de like. I pick dead chorus frogs & spadefoot toads off the road every now & then to use for starting my southern hogs on scented pinkies, so I could spare a couple.

Melanistic animals grow to be black.
Try braining the pink and holding it up to the snout so that some of the brains get on the mouth. Be patient, and keep it there a while, regardless of all the hissing. Might take it that way, worked for my little hatchling, and feeds great on unscented now. BTW, this method is done without picking the animal up, but leaving it in it tubs so it doesn't feel to stressed.
You may want to also try water from a can of tuna. Some really like that scent as well.
Good luck with it. My little one came from a guy in Alabama as well....wonder if it was the same guy.

Cool!
Pretty soon you will have to add hognose snakes to your tagline. They are so fun and cool that nobody can just have one
