Repro Phys question

lauraLSU Sep 26, 2003 04:38 PM

OK first, are orange spots an indicator of gravidness or ovulation?

Are lizards (collareds particularly) opportunistic ovulators?
(Ovulation as a response to mating)

I know sperm retention has been documented in other herps, but do lizards have the sperm storage tubules? Has anyone ever documented this phenomenon in collareds?

Squig and Siona got me thinking and I couldn't really find the answers on any reliable websites. Just curious about this stuff! I would love to look into these questions if anyone has documented any interesting info.

Lets say it's spring (pretend) LOL a female will develope ova, eggs Ovualte, then she developes her (nuputial blush, orange spots) soon after she can be intoduced to the male if not with her, and they may breed then. And yes, I have heard of collareds retaining sperm.
If I were Kristin, and I already emailed her, I would NOW re-introduve Squig with Siona, under supervision, if she fears Squig will hurt Siona. But NOW is the time,

So how do I know when she actually is gravid?

eve Sep 26, 2003 10:38 PM

she was huge, orange and layed infertile eggs, they can have the eggs inside, but not acually mate, then they lay but not fertile. Understand? Put them together, if you start seeing Squig mounting her and shes receptive, then, you will know. Just put them together. Every once in awhile check them, make sure shes fine. Odds are if he was trying last week he will mate with her. Zuni always started to get frisky with Hopi and then I would see some orange, and then, he would not leave her alone. And then EGGS !!! Eve

It's not him I'm worried about. Squig's quite the little stud. I'm just afraid she'll end up stuck in her cave again.

Kristin, I'm gonna use Siona and Squig as my example because I love them!

If Squig and Siona mated while they were together and she started blushing after the separation, could she have retained the sperm to fertilize the ovum that was uvulated after the separation?
Did that make any sense?

Siona may not have been very receptive to Squigs attemps, at that time, as she would be now. But it could be possible, sure, some females never get much orange coloring anyway, My female vestiguim, you can hardly tell shes blushing, small orange streak on her neck. Point is shes just starting to show orange and I would re-introduce them. Odds are he will be more interested now than before, and chances of breeding higher.
