Hissing or wheezing?

snakekate Nov 23, 2010 04:07 PM

Just recently got a 6 foot, approx 15- 20 pound female boa, shes really docile and easy to handle, but I have noticed she makes some odd noise when shes out. Sounds like shes forcing air through her nostrils,(almost a 'wind tunnel' sound) theres no watery sound to it, and she never opens her mouth or acts aggressive...so is she just nervous and hissing at us, or is there a chance she has a respiratory infection? Again, I have had her about a week now and no mucous discharge or gaping or bubbling. I have another female, same age but a foot shorter, and I have had her since she was a neonate, and never heard her make the sound before. This new female also has a slight bump on her nose, nothing disfiguring just a slight'bend' a centimeter off the tip of her nose, we also wondered if its possible a past injury may be the cause?

If you are not seeing any of the typical symptoms of an RI, especially any excess mucous in the mouth, it is quite possible that internal damage to the nares could be the cause. It will be interesting to see if it changes or disappears with time.
