Alterna Update!

TonyT89 Nov 27, 2010 08:25 PM

Hey Folks,

Remember a month back when I posted a message regarding my Christmas Mtn Alterna possibly having a possible parasite? He indeed had one and I went to the vet and got some metronidazole or flagyl and the vet told me pretty much the exact same dosing as Dmong recommended! After a few doses for this guy he is back and healthy and very active. 2 weeks later from the final dose I gave him a small pink and gradually increased the size of the meal.

To correct a misunderstanding from the earlier replies, this alterna is about 20 inches and feeding on 1-2 large pinks a week, sometimes 3 small pinks. He just moved a size up with peach fuzzies! He is the best feeding snake in my whole collection. This is his hatchling picture. He is now a year and 3 months and getting darker. He will in fact become jet black with reddish orange by the time he is 2 years old!

I remember posting pictures of some of my locality alternas a while back and received 0 replies. I just wanted to let you guys know that I love locale and non-locale alternas as I have both in my collection. They are all gray banded kingsnakes in the end. I just hope I didn't receive any replies to my pictures because they were locale so I just wanted to clarify it and not try to spark any problems. I love this forum and the people that keep it afloat and alive! I've learned quite a lot from these kingsnake forums! Thanks for the advice that some gave to help this little guy out!

Thanks Mike. I am glad as well. He is my only dark phase Alterna too so it would have been a big loss for me.

Here is his (Crimson) most recent picture. This was him 3 months ago. He is bigger now and getting darker every shed. Alterna are great in which they all have such a way of changing through age. This is what makes them so special, besides their googly eyes!

That is great to hear that the snake is doing much better now!

Congratulations on doing the right thing, and taking it to a vet.

Hope things stay on the smooth road from now on.

cheers!, ~Doug

It has been smooth so far as of now! He is such an aggressive feeder as well! The odd thing is that he has grown a lot bigger since the problem and he has not shed since but I'm sure he will turn opaque any day coming up. Thanks Doug! You hit the problem right on the money!

Sure thing Tony!,....I just love to hear about good outcomes, and snakes that go onto thrive after unfortunate things have happened to them.

Keep us posted from time to time on how the little guy is doing man.

LOL, I always am fond of your thumbs up picture! I'm very happy he is healthy now.

The only strange thing is that he hasn't turned opaque for over a month now. Before he was sick he was shedding once every 25 days or so. I guess we will see, but it should come around any day now...

Glad to hear your snake is doing well! I have three dark Alterna and I really like them. I wasn't a big fan of the dark ones but I got a great deal on 3 females two years ago that I couldn't pass them up. They have since really grown on me, and they get darker with each shed. I was hoping to continue feeding them a lot till December, but they have reduced they're feeding way down. I'm not sure I'll be able to breed them this next season?

Nice! I've always been a fan of them, mainly a variety of color and pattern. I make sure that I have different variations of Alterna, one with orange bands and gray background, one with red bands and black background, one that's gray alterna phase. I am trying to add a speckled dark Alterna to my collection as well. As soon as my budget can fit another one. Those look real nice!

Do you have pictures of any of those dark Alternas? I would love to see them =)!
