Rack Question...

Kiknskreem Nov 27, 2010 09:21 PM

Hey guys... I just picked up a 10 level rack off of craigslist.

It has flexwatt backheat.

The temperature difference between the top and bottom tubs is significant.

Obviously, heat rises, but do most tall racks have a noticeable difference of several degrees?

I figure I'll keep my more temperate species at the bottom.

Define significant.

That is actually a misnomer, heat does not rise it radiates in all directions, HOT AIR rises... there is a difference.

That is always an option. The most influence on the situation you describe above is that of a hot rack in a cool room. Particularly with heat tape, I find that any time the room gets below 75°F the effect of the cool floor warm ceiling has a dramatic effect on the rack. I try and keep my room between 75°F and 80°F. I also don't use my bottom rack but heat it none the less so that its heat effects those above.

I would say the top shelves get around 5 degrees warmer on each end.

It is a plywood rack heated by flexwatt, and y'know, the room has been really cool because I'm using it as my roach room and I've had windows open for ventilation. Definitelygets below 75.

I'd consider raising the temps in the room and see what you get, perhaps move the roaches to another room. I used to keep mine in the laundry room un-heated but with heat tape they still stayed above 70°F

All the roaches are moving to their own office pretty soon.

I will see how the temps act with the windows closed.

Appreciate the input!
