Recovering well

brhaco Nov 28, 2010 11:44 AM

My wild-collected '06 alterna (from the last cut on 118 before the flats around Elephant Mntn.) had retained some eggs from the '09 season, so we had to operate to remove them last Spring. Here she is this week-all healed nicely and eating great after her ordeal. Close one. No breeding attempt this coming year (if ever-we'll see)!

Wow that's great you could save her. Pretty girl whether you breed her or not.

Glad to hear she is doing well. That is a helluva surgery to go thru. Personally I would def be hesitant to breed her again.

Believe me, Cindy, I'm VERY hesitant to breed her-the only reason I'd even consider it is due to the rare locality she represents, and the fact that the surgery was relatively uncomplicated-no adhesions, etc.

Thats a goodlooking animal Brad. I really loved herping the area she came from. Do you have pics of the male you had bred her to in 09'? How close was his locality to the area she was found?

Actually her eggs were infertile in '09-the "male" I was using (on breeding loan) turned out to be female!

That's a great looking animal Brad, and an interesting story to go a long w/ her now too.

Brad, I had one do that many years ago. My vet did surgery and she went on the have many more fertile clutches. My vet, who is also my best friend, did tell me that this was not expected.

I still have this snake today. She was CB in 1993 and her mom I caught in 1990 is still alive. Highway 277 Red Bluffs

I love that snake Brad!

Glad to hear that. Such a beautiful Alterna as well. I went the same thing you had but my Alterna had a parasite. He is completely back on track and feeding well. Must have been a lot of stress going through that problem. She seems like a very good size Alterna too.

I know I keep posting this Alterna but he's one of my favorites and is getting darker every shed! This is the one that went through a parasite. Anyway congrats on restoring your Alterna!

Tony
