Hypo vs normal as hatchlings Post hypo's for me?

IcedGoddess May 26, 2003 01:45 PM

could you please post pics of hypo hatchlings? Not ghosts or anything fancy, just hypo.

A few of my babies have GREATLY reduced black, and TONS of red. These ones also have "spotty" belly checks (not as in lacking, but as in speckles of white) and what they do have is pretty gray, vs BLACK on the others.

I'm thinking i got lucky and both the snow and okeetee are het hypo. I hope, because the red on these guys is FANTASTIC!

Here's one of the ones i think (may be ) hypo, there's 4 or 5 that i think could be, this one just sat the stillest and isn't flighty like the others, so he didn't care about the photo-shoot during his first meal.

It was really hard to get the red to show up, crappy lighting in my house, but the saddles are really red and what black border there is sort of blurs into the red, and is very thin. You can see it best in the full throat pic, plus he's got a great pattern, a keeper for sure!

most of the "black" you see on the back half is actually dark red in person. He was eating, so no belly shots today.

Post pics of the suspects along with normal sibs. It should be pretty obvious with any halfway-decent pic.

thanx, and GRRRRR lol
the one i did get pics of is the darkest of my "suspect hypo's" and his head looks just like yours in person, but he does get a lot darker toward the back. After they've digested I'll take some outside for better pics of their colors. (all 12 have shed and only 3 left to eat)
so do you think i can call him zigzag? or partial zigzag? or is it not enough odd pattern? This is the one with the MOST of it.

Ya, it's really hard to tell with that pic. When you do take pics again, try to get him next to a normal. It will make it a lot easier for anyone looking to see the real color differences.

I don't know what range there is with hypos, but with the normal/hypo comparisons and anery/ghost comparisons that I've ever seen, you'd have to be blind to miss the difference.

Personally, I would call it a partial zigzag, ya. I would only call something a "zigzag" if the zagging really dominates the snake's look, like if it's more than about 80-90% zagged.

Here's my partial zigzag:

She has a total of about 15 zagged saddles out of about 40, and has never thrown any offspring with any strings of zagging. The closest is this, with the one little "V" saddle on the neck:

Here's pics of my hypo when I got her, around 11.5"

She was very brightly colored with very faded gray. Very distinguisable from the normal hatchlings I've seen.

This pic is a little dark...

In the below pic the hypos have maroon or crimson saddles. The hatchling second from left is a normal, and the hatchling in the lower right-hand corner is an anery.
Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Here is an old picture of a hypo from a previous year (this one is a yearling in this picture) remember that most people don't have hatchlings yet, Most of mine haven't even laid their first clutch yet, so I can't give you any fresh pictures. The Hypos I've produced especially when hatching have NO black, rather they have a light lavender coloring where the black should be (it often darkens up somewhat when they get older) If you actually have hatched some hypos, there will be no doubt in your mind. They really do look quite a bit different from normals especially when they hatch.

The comparison pics gave it away
I've never hatched any corns before, so identifying the hatchlings will take a few more varried breedings i think (plus the closest to "normal" colored corn I have is a very orange okeetee)
