SICK FEMALE LEOPARD GECKO

hopwood May 26, 2003 02:00 PM

Hello, My name is Steve and I have 3 females and 1 male leopard gecko.
I have had the 3 females for about 8 months and have added the male about a month ago. I am just learning all about them as I go and now i am faced with a problem.

The smallest female seems to be very weak. It is difficult for her to walk as she seems to be dragging her body and her tail seems to be thinning which means that she is using up her energy stores. There is always fresh water and ample cricket supply.

What, if anything can I do??? Hopefully some one out there can help
Thanks

Steve

Do you keep them all housed together? If you do, you need to watch and see if she is getting any of the food or if all of the others are eating all the food. If they are eating all the food, you might want to try to feed her by hand, my female albino loves eating when I feed her by hand. Hope this helped.

Thanks for the responce,
How do you feed yours by hand? Just dangle a cricket in front of her?

My albino doesn't like to eat the crickets, she always shys away, so I feed her meal worms, she loves them. I just pick up the meal worm and hold in in front of her face and she licks it, and it start to wiggle and then she wags her tail and then lunges at it and takes it from my fingers. But if you do just feed them meal worms, you have to make sure you have a calcium dish so they are getting enough calcium. And also, the crickets you are feeding them, they need to be dusted in calcium. But she loves to eat from my hand, so you might want to try that, and maybe she is just not being let a chance to eat by the others. Glad to help.

Thanks for the help,

Should I separate her from the other 3? Cause rright now I believe I have 2 females waiting to lay their eggs and I don't want them getting sick also. Also, how long does it usually take for the female to actually lay the eggs?

I'm really sorry but I have never bread any yet, and I don't want to give you a wrong answer. I would maybe try to seperate her from the others just to see if you can get her eating on her own, but as far as the eggs go, I don't want to give you a wrong answer, sorry again.

Is there anything you can do? How about taking her to vet for starters.

Does she have a calcium dish? Sounds like it could be MBD.

And put her in a seperate enclosure immediately. Then you can see if she is eating and pooping normally, and she won't have to compete for food.
