Nile Monitor food bill

oberon Dec 02, 2010 11:22 PM

Care to share the cost of properly feeding a Nile Monitor?
If anyone could give some figures for baby to juvenile to adult stages, I would appreciate it. I realize that the costs may be different depending on where/how you obtain their diet. Maybe an estimate for a per week or month period.
Thanks!

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY TO TAKE ON THE COMMITMENT OF A LARGE MONITOR BEFORE YOU GET ONE , THERE ARE MANY MORE COSTS INVOLVED IN TAKING ON AND FEEDING ONE OF THESES LARGE LIZARDS,
I RECENTLY RESCUED A 4 FOOT WATER MONITOR THAT WAS IMPROPERLY HOUSED AND FEED, MY INITIAL COST OF PROPERLY SETTING UP A ROOM SIZED ENCLOSURE WAS JUST UNDER $3000, NOT INCLUDING THE INCREASE COST IN MY MONTHY UTILITY BILLS , FEEDER ROACH COLONY, AND THE HUNRED RODENTS IN MY FREEZER . IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT THE FEEDING COSTS YOU MAY WANT TO RETHINK OWNERSHIP AT THIS TIME.
IF I HAD TO GIVE AN ESTIMATE OF PROPERLY FEEDING AN ADULT IT WOULD BE ABOUT $16 A WEEK . REMEMBER THIS DEPENDS UPON IF YOU WILL BE RAISING FEEDER COLONYS OR BUYING LARGE QUANITIES AT A TIME, MAYBE BOTH.
ANYWAYS HOPE THIS HELPED

I agree with keeping large monitors being a big commitment. There are plenty of threads (here and elsewhere) regarding housing and setup costs, but I haven't really read about what it costs to properly feed.
I wouldn't have figured the cost to be that low. I think I spent more on my bearded dragon between the crickets, roaches, worms(phoenix, horn, super) and greens/veggies.
But, like you mentioned, if you have a big roach colony and a freezer full of bulk feeder mice, then it may end up working out to be that way.
Thanks for the info.

Anyone else?
