Substrate Poll/Question...

BrandonSander Dec 03, 2010 03:31 AM

I'm wondering what substrate everyone uses in their cages and racks and why. What have you found to be the pros and cons of your particular substrate preference.

Also, if you could let us know your approximate location - so we know what kind of ambient temps you encounter and the average humidity in your area. (These two factors seem to play a big part in people's substrate decision, along with price and availability.)

Thanks everyone!

I'm still not sure if it's weird that my best friend is a two year old boa named Ronin. He's quiet, non-judgemental and listens... what more could you want?

Newspaper for most. Baby SSTs or neonate that need high humidity get damp moss. Later that becomes a humid hide for some. Obviously it is free and easy to get and lightweight. I don't like that lack of traction. If I have burrowers (kenyan sand boa) I used Cellsorb Plus...a recycled paper pellet that held burrows well and is digestible...but weighs a TON.
In upstate NY and with my basement reptile room I can maintain temp and humidity easy.

I live in Pennsylvania and keep BCC boas, carpets, bloods, and retics on newspaper in Vision or Barr's cages. Tried all the loose substrates but newspaper works best for me and very clean cages. Bill
