brand new baird

FireDrake Dec 03, 2010 04:10 PM

Im bored, so I thought I'd share a photo of my brand new male bairds, a hypo or T albino, or whatever they are being called now.
The homo female I had died this year, so I've been trying to replace her, only to find males.

I'm getting more and more interested in these snakes, thinking about getting out of corns and just keeping bairds!

thanks for looking

It's hard to go wrong with bairdis....although for some reason that don't sell very well. People just don't realize what they're missing. Anyone I've met that keeps bairdis, loves them
I know I do...

Jimmy, bairdi appear to be appreciated by "seasoned" hobbyists and breeders than the "fresh out the egg" folks that are attending the shows, etc. Man, I could write a thesis on the changes I have seen in the hobby over the past 15-20 years regarding many cool species. Bairdi, fox snakes, and tons of other NA and Asian Elaphe just seem to have fallen off the planet as far as easy acquisition. You just dont see them that much at the shows and general herp market. If it aint some bizarre color/pattern, or has a "wow" factor of any kind, then there represenation in the market has just dwindled unfortunately.

I agree. It is a shame they are not more popular, especially for me now doing some searches on locality specific snakes. But on the other hand, them being more rare, I think makes the WOW factor more so, when someone gets it. That's what happened with me anyways.

Im not in it for the money, but when I do breed it would be nice to be able to sell babies so I can buy mice, and raise babies, and then breed them. But it's a pain when I cant find good homes for the extras.

I know I do, as well. To keep one is to love them ALL!

I LOVE mine. She changes and gets more fascinating to look at with every shed. She is also as calm as a snake can be. I think a nice texas bairdi with the right combo of silver and orange blows away any corn snake morph and im strictly talking aesthetics. throw in the fact that they are as calm and hardy as a corn and you have an awesome snake. Bummer they are not big sellers for breeders but a plus for me. i got my girl cheap and shes a favorite in my collection!

I remember when they were a rare and expensive snake in the 1980s. I finally got 1.1 yearling Bairds a couple years ago and bred them this year. They are indeed cool snakes - more active than kings, milks and corns. As a bonus, the babies I produced this year hatched out big and all ate fuzzy mice without hesitation.

I dont blame you for wanting to get out of corns, really the bairds are just amazing to me! I really want a hypo! Saw a few hypos at Daytona this year but just didnt have the money, maybe next year.

Sarah, do you still have the female I gave you to a while back? How is she doing?
