A friend of mine has a painted turtle that is approximately 3 inches, how can the sex be determined?

It's hard to tell when they are that small but when it gets bigger it will be a dead giveaway.
Males have long claws (so long that you will think they need to be trimmed lol) and an indent on their Plastron so they can mount the female to mate. They have short thick tails.
Females have shorter claws and their Plastron is flat. They have long thin tails.

Hi,

Just to clarify, males have long tails with the vent far
away from the body. Females have short tails and their
vent is close to the body.
