Weirded out by genetics

DougM Dec 06, 2010 06:38 PM

The other day when I was reading the thread on Hypo Hondos I started thinking more about genetics. I used to raise pigeons and chickens and many of their colors are sex-linked.

That got me thinking about how sex-linked genetics are tied to the X or Y chromosome. Then that led to a remembrance of 4th grade Science class; that men have an X and Y chromosome and women have X/X. So basically those of us who are men are actually...

...het WOMEN!

How crazy is that?!

LOL, yup.

Unless you have Klinefelter's syndrome, then you XXY, and homozygous female/homozygous male!

Your comments bring back memories. I had tumbling pigeons when I was a kid. Also raised sex-link chickens. They were incredible layers, producing triple yolked eggs pretty often. Enjoyed your observations.

yeah....in early embryonic stages....i believe the sexual equipment is the same and the first hit of testosterone initiates changes......some believe that the Y chromosome is a defective X......anyone out know for sure????

DMong Dec 08, 2010 12:06 AM

I always thought when the two "X" chromosomes were together....THAT was defective!

Why else would they make such a big deal about stupid things like toilet seats being up and toothpaste caps being off??...LMAO!!

Weirded out by genetics????? You should try living in my area.

Any how, back to the subject at hand. "Que Sera, Sera". When I heard Doris Day sing this song in that Hitchcock movie with Jimmy Stewart, I've never tried to figure out who's got what. I put my pairs together and hope they don't make a meal out of each other and that all the eggs are goodies.

Strange coincidence, this girls name really is Kay Sera Sera Roy! Leave it to the Maine hillbillies...

Well, maybe it's just because I'm a Maine hillbilly, but I was so impressed by your picture, that I just had to ask my girlfriend if we could invite her over to wash our snakes. Unfortunately, she said no, because she thought that the girl in the picture probably has "herps". I told her that she pronounced "herps" wrong, and that she obviously has at least one "herp" (the boa constrictor, duh), but it doesn't seem to have helped my case any.

DMong Dec 11, 2010 12:41 PM

That is too funny Terry!..LMAO!!!

Now go eat some "comfort" food and things will be all better!
