Brumating yearlings/juveniles

Ryan_Sikola Dec 06, 2010 08:26 PM

Hey do many of you cool down your yearlings/sub-adults?

I personally have always fed them year round for a few years until they are big enough to breed, then brumate and pair em up.

I brumated my 09 bulls last winter so they would not lose weight. This year when they went off feed again I have done the same. I also am brumating my two trios of 08 and 09 pyros and will soon brumate my baby pyros as well, since they too have gone off feed for the winter.

For non breeders my main reason for brumation is to conserve body mass. If they do not eat because of seasonal demands but can't get to cooler temperatures they tend to lose too much weight.

my hatchling male Kanakee bull is brumating himself anway, while the female in the same cage stays on the warm area, and she eats once a week, while the male likes to say under the cool area between 60-65 degrees night and day temps. My male hatchling southern pine has cut down on his eating but he still has good weight. I just watch my snakes and let their actions do the talking.

Well I said to hell with it, I'm brumating my larger yearlings, sub-adults and breeders.

Only the strong will survive...

Feeding my 15 or so 2010s will cost me $10-$20 a week. What a relief during the x-mas season.
