Banded Rock Lizards

wwwwwells Feb 08, 2003 11:46 AM

I was out hiking around in the Santa Rosa Mnts near Borrego Springs a few days ago. It was sunny but cool. I came to an old spring and there were 3 banded rock lizards basking in the sun. I was surprised to see them since it wasn't warm. Picture isn't too good but that's as close as I could get.

Saw some last weekend by the 8 grade. Some of the largest I've ever seen. It was cool enough to climb some of the mts. without breaking a sweat.

Santa Rosa Mtns and the nearby Indian Cyn Park (palm Cyn, San Andreas Cyn, etc.) are great spots to checkout for reptiles during the sunny winter months. When exploring that area one winter day, i was happy to find Western Skink, Chuckwalla, Granite Spiny Lizards, Side-blotched Lizards, Speckled Rattler, and Banded Rock Lizard.

Speaking of Indian Cyns Park and exploring for winter active lizards. I've returned to s. California and am eager to explore the desert again. Im considering a trip to Riverside county to checkout Halls Grade, and other rocky areas about the lower slope, at the North fringe of the San Jacinto Mtns. Also, im considering a trash flipping trip somewhere in Riverside's inland valleys to seek out the San Diego Banded Gecko and other trash loving herps.
