House Gecko?

arborealmama Sep 26, 2003 09:42 PM

Hello - my son has been looking at some rather cute but plain little geckos at the pet store called house geckos. Now, we can find noi info on these little guys and were wondering if they go by another name. They are certainly inexpensive compare to leos. Anyone with info for us? We would be greatly appreciative.

They're inexpensive because they're an introduced species and people throughout the southern US can catch them on their own houses! Cheaper than leos, but then again leos won't jump out of your hands and run up the wall and across your ceiling.

The current issue of Reptiles Magazine has a short article on house gecko care. You can also search for "House Gecko Care Sheet" or replace "House" with "Turkish" or even search for "Hemidactylus Care Sheet" and come up with some stuff.

They are most commonly known as Mediterranean Geckos. But the Reptiles article mentioned in the other post does in fact call them Turkish Geckos. I have three of these now, all gathered from my house here in Central Texas. They have been excellent captives for several months now, and require very simple husbandry.

An interesting little Gecko, but beware, they are fast as lightning and can jump surprisingly far.

Best of luck.
