So you want a baby blackthroat?

lizardrc Dec 10, 2010 02:16 AM

This is one animal that came from a 6'x10'x8' enclosure with a hanging row of basking lamps. It along with others came with burns, ear and vent infections, muscle wasting and MBD. It has been recovering from that ordeal in its life.

So you may say, wow, that sounds like it was a big cage and wow, that sounds like a good, large basking spot.
Well for these animals, yes, those are 2 good things but proper husbandry is so much more than that.
You have to allow these animals to dig and have a burrow so no, a wood floor and some cypress mulch sprinkled on top is not going to do it.

also, You can't just feed these animals pieces of chicken or beef as there is little calcium/nutrients in pieces of meat.
I could go on but there is already repeatedly provided information on this board by FR that you should read carefully.

So please think and read a lot before you buy that cute baby black throat in the cup. And please think and read before you buy a larger animal as well. And please don't stick your black throat in a vision cage, those are for snakes.

Sorry for my rant, I close with this video of what will happen to the baby in the deli cup.
(sorry about the vid quality) (and no, Indiana Jones was not in the enclosure.)

Hello there, yes that is impressive you have such a long term giant.
Please continue to share info with other folks here....There were/are a lot of "blackthroats" brought in this year.

Btw, is she 12 years old or 11? Last year I recall you mentioned she was turning 10. That stood out to me as you don't see that very often, unfortunately.
Cheers

I had one of FR cape banded WTs that may have been older yet, and a timor that was older yet than that WT, I gave him to a friend years ago, who sold him a few years later while I was present at a reptile show.

I used to post here alot years ago, at some time I decided I dont have alot of time to post much here, and did not feel like arguing with a few people, or putting up with a few and their insults.
Ive always enjoyed participating with FR, he has alot of good info, and real husbandry experience beyond anyone.
Keeping them long term, having them grow huge, and be healthy is very easy, I dont understand why others cant get the same results. I used to keep several species of monitor, a few snakes, also had breeding red ackies, beardies, and a few other species. I reduced my collection of ectotherms and spend alot of time with my canines, now 3 of them.
