HIMALAYAN TIMES (Kathmandu, Nepal) 06 December 10 First sighting of rare python in Shuklaphanta Mahendranagar: A racilles viper species of python found usually in the Terai has also been seen in Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve recently, it was reported on Saturday.
The snake spotted a month ago, resembles a python but has different spots on its body, Hemanta Yadav, chief of the National Nature Conservation Trust (NNCT) said.
The snake is active mostly at night and is rarely seen in the day but is much more poisonous, Yadav said, adding that the habitat of the python is the open grass land of Nepal.
The NNCT said that the python can be found up to an altitude of 250 feet to 1,000 feet in the Chure region. The NNCT quoted IUCN that this can be found in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Taiwan besides Nepal. Yadav said, although it was first seen in the Shuklaphanta, it is not a new species.
