Hognose egg question

twillis10 Dec 11, 2010 02:22 AM

I posted a while back about my female I though was gravid, and everyone thought she was not. I didnt either, especially when she was a month past due. Well she never really showed, but today, 2 months past due, I found 12 eggs. I hadnt checked on her for around 5 days so im not sure when she layed them. Luckily her lay box was still moist and warm. The eggs were a little dimpled in and soft, but still nice and white.

My question is could they still be good eggs after sitting in there for a few days? I know its hard to say without personally seeing them but just wanted to hear your thoughts. I can take pics soon but I didnt want to disturb them right after setting them up. Also how long before you can see if they are fertile by candling? I did make a video when i found them so ill post the link as soon as I can get it up.

Eggs sit there it's kind of all they do. If the eggs are fertile and the conditions of the egg lay container aren't too extreme they should be a few days toward hatching. Congratulations on the clutch. Let us know if you get pipping at the end of January. Those would be some pretty early 2011's!

I'd say rather than being two months past due, she was just starting to build follicles back when you first posted about her. She then ovulated a few weeks later and now you have eggs.

And like Adam said, the eggs should be fine if the nest box was warm and humid, as those are the same requirements of an incubation box as well.

You should be able to candle for veins the minute they are laid. I have had a few take a couple days to develop, but most can be seen immediately.

Congrats in the eggs. Post some pics when they hatch.

Incubate everything until it stinks! You would be surprised at how many nasty looking eggs hatch.....
