BABY BLIZZARD HISSES AND BITES...

bmills May 26, 2003 02:14 PM

I went to get a blizzard at a pet store, and it hissed and bit me 3 times. How long would it take her to get used to me so she didn't hiss and bite, and would she ever get used to me? What would I have to do in order to get her used to me. My other 2 leos are fine, they have never hissed or bit ever. I don't want to get a leo that will bite me when I try to hold her. Please let me know.

Other people in the forum have said that their blizzards are more aggressive than the other morphs. So she might always be that way, or if you just keep holding her she might eventually get used to you. Baby leo bites are surprise you more than they actually hurt anyways. So just keep trying and maybe she will eventually get used to you.

my blizzard has never been one bit agressive. i doubt it has to do with the morph.

bmills May 26, 2003 02:26 PM

Would it be a good idea to just not get it because it bit me 3 times??? Or should I get it and it will get used to me after it is used to being around people? My other 2 leos are not aggressive at all, they love to be held and petted under the chin. Please let me know?

iluvblackfrancis May 26, 2003 02:31 PM

i say if you want it get it. i had an albino that was aggressive and after a week or two he was as tame as any other. leopard geckos almost always tame up, and if they dont, theyre probably hot females or you doing something wrong.

bmills May 26, 2003 02:41 PM

What exactly is a hot female? She is very beautiful and I hope she will tame up if I get her. She is the first blizzard I have found...thanks again.

iluvblackfrancis May 26, 2003 02:43 PM

when incubation temps get to hot, sometimes females are produced. they are usually bullies, big, and dont get along with other geckos. they are also i believe sterile. i doubt that the blizzard is a hot female. its probably just scared to death.

bmills May 26, 2003 02:48 PM

Yea, when I put my hand in she didn't take her eye off of it and was very scared, she was only about 4 inches long. She looked to just be defending...I just don't want to get her if she will always be like that. My others eat from my hand, and let me pet them under their chins and just run to my hand when I put it in and climb up. The blizzard is beautiful and unique, I havn't found one in any pet stores in cincinnati yet. Just don't want her to always be that way.

Actually, i think Bradley on here said that is was proven that they only grow slower and there is nothing wrong with them besides that.

that "hot" females are nothing but slow growers, they are no more or less agressive then any other gecko. This information is in The Leopard Gecko Manual, and it states that in 1988 Gutzke and Crews reported that these "hot" females did not reproduce, as well as being agressive. Then there were two other studies by Veits in 1993, and Touisgnant in 1995 about these hot females and they found no agressive behavior and they produced, they just mature at a very low rate. Because of this Gutzke and Crews determined them infertile, when in fact they were.

I've got a "hot" female that is now a proven breeder, she's also a blizzard and the calmest leo I own. Go figure.

I have a male that from day 1 was so sweet and so is his son. I handle both of them daily. Now i have 1 female that i have had for 6 months that hates being handled and bites and runs away from anyone and anything. I have handled her the same way as i have all my other ones and when she was sick i had to hand feed her (not force feed) and she still hates me. I don't expect her to get tame but still regullarly handle her. I think it is just their personality. Some leo's are nice and some have other plans. So it's not right to say that if your leo is not nice you are doing something wrong or they are hot females. And btw she is a hypo tang and this is a pic of her.

If you don't like my geckos....you won't like me!

armiyana May 26, 2003 09:02 PM

My blizzard male is still jumpy and nippy and I've owned him over a year.
My albino male is as tame as a puppy tho...he'll just chill out on your knee for hours at a time. He was one of the most aggressive babies I've had also.

Blizzards are naturaly more jumpy, nervous or aggressive

Josh06 May 26, 2003 03:14 PM

Well, many people on here have said that their blizzards were more agressive than their other leos. I think these discussions happened before you came here though.

have blizzards that are unuasally agressive and more so then any of our other geckos of the same age. I have three blizzards that are horrible, every time I open their hide to add water, they hiss, strike, and don't want anything to do with me and their nearly 8 months old. I have two other blizzards that are very skitish and you would not be able to handle them. Every gecko is different, but it seems that blizzards are commonly more pre-disposed to be aggressive.

honestly i do not know where you are getting your information. i have a couple of blizzards and had some het. all were either extremely agressive or nerveous ( including the hets). just about everyone i have ever talked to has agreed. in my opinion blizzards tend to have nasty atrtitude and most likely they will stay like that. if you want a tame gecko chances are blizz's arent the gecko for you, i personally love them, they add spice to leo geckos ;o) ... just because a gecko is mean doesnt mean there is anything wrong with it like being a hot female or anything. I do not know why blizzards are like this but they are. i think as far as blizzards are concerned a tame one is much more a rarity then a mean one.

=D
LOL...
Honestly tho...

My male is still VERY nervous...even after owning him for 1 and 1/2 years and getting him as a baby. He's nipped my a few times. My het female is a little better behaved...but very moody. Sometimes she's very sweet, other times just as nervous as the male or aggressive.
The hets I've hatched are all pretty jumpy. One is all out aggressive, still screaming and nipping at a month and a half old, while the others are just nervous as they come.
The blizzards I hatched this year....
One was very docile since hatching...the other was a nervous one at first, but starting to calm a bit. She's nicer than her dad.

My male is the one in the pic, that was the second day I had him, hand picked right from Prehistoric Pets and a 40 minute drive back home.

bmills May 26, 2003 02:28 PM

She bit me 3 times with my hand in there, but I can definitely say that she is not used to being around people because they just got her in. But would you think she would get used to me and calm down?

iluvblackfrancis May 26, 2003 02:33 PM

np

Cardinale May 26, 2003 02:47 PM

I think it is just aggresive cuz my jungle leopard gecko is the same way

bmills May 26, 2003 02:51 PM

Yea, I don't have it yet...it is still in the pet stores and they just got it so it isn't used to people yet. I am just afriad that she will never get used to me and will always stay very aggressive. My other 2 are extremely calm and love to be held and petted. I feed them from my hands all the time.

bmills May 26, 2003 09:17 PM

It sounds that people are mixed and some think she will get tame while others think she won't. I will have to say that most people tend to think that blizzards are naturally more aggressive, I cannot say, since I don't have one. I just have a normal and an albino, which are tame as can be, and I feed them by hand, and they run up to my hand when I put it in the tank, they love to be held and petted under the chins. I am definitely looking for a tame leo, not to say that there is anything wrong with aggressive ones, somebody mentioned that they add spice to the leos, and this is true, just not for me. The last thing I want to do is get a leo and regret it because I want the leos be have the best owner possible, and am just not sure I'm the owner for the blizzard. I will let somebody who doesn't mind the aggressiveness take her which will be better for her. Again, I greatly appreciate all the input, and sorry for all the posts. I am new in the leo world, I've had 2 leos for about 2 months, and I just like to get as much information before I buy something new, so like I said, I can make sure I can give them a home they need. Thanks again everybody. I am also looking for a snow or a jungle, so if anybody has any information on them, please let me know so I can research them. Thanks.
