Taming your Cham?

silvertarpon Sep 26, 2003 10:10 PM

Any tips on taming these guys? I know that they perfer not to be handled, but sometimes It's necessary like when you clean the cage. I have a 4 month old that flees like the wind whenever I need him. Not to mention his hissing. Any Ideas?

Yeh, I have a 5 month old female that hates humans! She will run across the cage to bite you. she has no mercy. I've only been able to hold her once recently, and i have no idea why she let me pick her up. But once she sees a human she goes into all these crazy colors and leaps at you. Should name her Cujo.

Just handle him/her every day. Force him/her to like you. I had to force my male veiled to like me, it only took 3 days of constant handling and now he's very tame. He will gape now and then if he is cold, though.

Most people say 'Oh no, this will stress him out!!!', but logically and realistically, I only stressed him for 3 days and now he's calm and cool whenever I come around compared to being stressed out his whole life whenever he sees me. He also doesn't stress out now when he's around my female like he used to do.

Consider it a crash course on taming. It will work out better for the both of you if you just 'make' them like you.

I got my chameleons all very tame by feeding them while handling them, so now they assosiate me with food.
I give them a large cricket and while they are chewing it I pick them up, then give them another. none of my chams were stressed out this way. now my male veild will run to the front of his cage when he see's me and he will climb on me and look for his dinner even if he's just ate and I'm just cleaning the cage. its VERY cute. (although it gets anoying having a chameleon crawling on you while your trying to clean)
