URGENT HELP---fluid in belly scales

chefquinlin Dec 11, 2010 05:19 PM

My albino western hognose has fluid in its belly scales. Is this from a burn or skin splitting disease? Any suggestions on what it could be? Using ssd ointment and cleaning cage every day and keeping him on paper towels. Any help would be great.

Can say I've had a problem with belly blisters but I have a jungle carpet python that developed blisters on his back an I'm sure they were from me misting him with water then him setting under a heat lamp. I drained them an just left them alone. They healed after couple of sheds. This happened couple years ago.

Is it approaching a shed? Could be moisture getting between the new and old skin to loosen prior to a shed cycle. It could be a bacterial or fungal disease too. Are the blisters forming and rupturing? I am sure a good herp vet could culture and tell you exactly what it is and how to combat it. My first guess due to the blistering if it is not a burn would be fungal. If fungal, antibiotic ointment probably will not do any good. I had a ball python many moons ago develop a belly scale fungus. I believe I used a weak bleach solution to help rid her if it. I think it was like 1 to 5 bleach. Maybe foot powders or creams for fungus/athleted foot may help, but be careful with application. I know foot powders/antifungals are used to combat mold on eggs, so should be OK if applied to belly scales. Without knowing the specific cause, anything is a shot in the dark that may or may not help.
