where do the red w. hogs come from ?

simias Sep 26, 2003 10:25 PM

Someone recently asked this question and didn't get an answer - it's a good one though - are red phase w. hogs (and red phases of other hog taxa) randomly occurring morphs, or are they geographically local ? If the latter, does anyone know where red morph plains hogs come from ? I'm not interested in collecting, I just study the taxonomy and wonder what folks out there might know.

I've always been under the impression they originate from the Heterodon n. gloydi

Maybe someone else has more info.
