Reply to tongue damage post....

garweft Dec 15, 2010 10:04 PM

I checked the deli cup who's hole my snake got it's tongue caught in and there was a good sized burr on one of the holes. The holes were burnt in with a soldering iron and are usually pretty clean but this one wasn't. I'll be sure to check them from now on, and hopefully this won't happen again.

When buying baby snakes it would be a good idea to check the condition of the tongue. At reptiles shows this would be easy. With shipped snakes upon receiving of the animal. Possibly many instances of poor feeders could be traced to tongue damage.

Well, I don't think it happens often but if it happens to you, once is enough. By the way my little guy died today. It was just too weak. I fed him a fuzzy tail to get something in his stomach and he couldn't handle it I guess.

Jorge, I'm sorry to hear that too. But those pictures did look like it was a pretty severe situation. I think we all will be more careful now.

Thanks Dennis! It does make you think twice when you see a snake in a deli cup, doesn't it?

That is sad, but at least we learned a new thing concerning deli cups. Thus is like those water bowls with the spill proof lids with a center hole that snakes tend to go into and get trapped and drown. A seemingly harmless piece of equipment...

But I make the hole bigger with a razor blade. I love them, and with the extra big hole I've yet to have a problem.

That's a good idea to enlarge the hoel.

One of my 12.7 quart baby tubs. The little ceramic bowl is nested in a plastic plant tray of sphagnum moss. My snakes are rather boisterous at times and would dump over a little plastic deli cup type water bowl! LOL! The moss tray also gives them another interesting feature in their tiny habitat.

I could see if I had as many snakes as some folks here that this would be tedious to do. Simple is good.

I jear that, lol. I only use those particular cups for hatchlings and some yearlings. I used to buy the rubbermaid storage bowls, but I can't find them anymore. Not like these anyway. I have one Sinaloan/Nelson that turns his bowl over no matter what I do! I'll have to make a special one for him, with a glued on base, lol.

If using those water cups, fill to a relatively shallow depth so even a trapped snake can easily avoid drowning.
