brumation question?

bowhunter1963 Dec 16, 2010 06:27 PM

My kings have been in brumation since the second week of November.About four or five of them are always in their water bowls. Is this normal?I've never had them stay in them for so long of a period. The snake room temps are in the mid fiftys. Thanks for any replies.

Yeah I have witnessed this also. I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't let the temps get any colder than 50 if you can help it.

I just was wondering because last year they didn't do it as often or for so long. The coldest the room gets is about 52* or so.If it gets colder I will close the window. Thanks for the reply.

One of my young adult trios this morning in their brumation tub. They like the moist sphagnum moss hide. (There is a cardboard soda flat box over this hide but I lifted it to show them). Also there is moss in their water bowl pan to catch the overflow when they get in the bowl, so that also adds humidity. Humidity is an average of 70%. In the wild they would have plenty of humidity in their rock crevices and root tunnels, wherever they hole up for the winter. Peoples' houses tend to be dry in the winter so maybe your snakes are needing more humidity.

The moist box is an excellent idea, but I have seen them soak even with a moist hide.

dang. I haven't even seen mine drink (although they do have small water bowls in with them).
I put a container of moss in the wine cooler, on this little half shelf it has, to up humidity for the whole thing. Seems to work so far.
I figure I'll take them out early January. I miss watching them
