skink comparison

Buffysmom Sep 26, 2003 11:53 PM

I'm looking to get a new reptile friend & am attracted to skinks. Can anyone direct me to a website, article, book etc. which would compare the various skink types available in the pet trade & the housing/care requirements for each so I can narrow my search? Thanks!

By that I mean that you should decide how much you can afford to spend for a captive-bred specimen, what size tank you are willing to provide, how much time to do you have for it, what kind of temperatures can you realistically create in the enclosure, what about humidity, how do you feel about feeding live foods, and all the other considerations that you are probably already aware of since you have so many other pets. Just my advice. Good luck.

That's exactly why I want a place where I can see a good number of skink types- so I can decide on one that fits my preferences. I'm pretty open on space, $, temps etc. I already feed live foods to my frogs & leopard geckos, so that's no problem- just buy more crix at a time But I'd like to see a comparison chart or something, something that shows pictures, so I can find one I like the look of, temperment, so the one I choose fits my desires there, environmental requirements, so I know I choose one that fits my lifestyle there etc...
I'm not necessarily set on a skink either. I just want a new species of lizard that I like the look of & I'm doing my research before deciding/buying. I've ruled out uromastyx, bearded dragons, water dragons, any type of monitor & iguanas. I'm looking into plated lizards, legless lizards, skinks & a few types of geckos.
Anyone have any suggestions of lizards they've particularly enjoyed?

I've thought about them, of course, as they seem pretty common in petstores right now (although I think I'll get my next pet online from a breeder). Since they're so common, though, I need help finding other types of skinks & learning about them, so I can make an informed decision. Any other suggestions?

What type of skink is in the picture at the top of this forum?

Little of both. I'd like a looker, & I don't need it to be snuggly or anything- I have leopard geckos for that But I would like to be able to get it out occassionaly w/o being wounded.
