Argentine Boas

724hp Dec 20, 2010 11:55 AM

I'm interested in purchasing a pair of Argentine Boas this upcoming spring/ summer but want to do my research on basically everything first. I've currently got kings, corns, balls, and a pair of dumerils.

anyone know of any good sites with info, breeders i could look up, or books i could get?

Any info, advice, or pictures will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Hello......
If all goes well I should have some around late summer. You can check the adults at my website (www.legacyreptiles.com)

Kind regards,
Orlando

thanks for replying!

those are some nice adults you've got and i'll for sure keep you in mind when it comes time to get a pair.

i've noticed a large variation in the color of various argentines... anywhere from dark chocolate and white to brown and tan. is the color something that varies from individual or just a matter of age? personally i'm a fan of the very dark ones.

From what I've seen over the last 20 years, most people breed the black out of Argentine Boas, unfortunately. There are light, orange and red lines. There may be someone out there who does breed for darkness, but I haven't seen it.
I'd also check out Gus @ Rio Bravo Reptiles. I'm sure he has "Wild type" Argentine Boas. By that I mean classic, dark specimens. He may even have some darker than usual animals.

I think some of that may be people picking up the pink babies, they look nice and stand out. I think pink turns brown and when I hold back, I keep the ones without pink. I prefer black adults.

Beauty is only one degree of how cool these snakes are. They are also known for being characters. They display an inquisitive behavior and are very active. I believe you will thoroughly enjoy them.

As for more info on them, I would suggest you get ahold of Vin Russo's book, The Complete Boa Constrictor. It will give you the info you seek. I consider it as the best book available for nearly everything about Boa constrictor.

I agree with the earlier comment that you will really enjoy these guys.

In addition to the other suggestions in this thread you should check out Gus Rentfro's writeup on Argentine boas from his website. It has a lot of really good information.

I have a pair of "wild types" that I am hoping to breed this year. Time will tell.
