My Knoblochi escaped......

TonyT89 Dec 21, 2010 10:33 PM

I forgot to put the lid on my tank last night and found my favorite knob missing. He is somewhere in my room and I looked since 10 in the morning till now but to no avail. Sigh...it seems that knobs are not my thing as something always happens everytime I own a knob it's strange. I worked so hard to save up for this guy and he's gone. He is a hatchling so he could be anywhere. I looked through every clothes I had, every wall, corner, drawer, under the bed and everywhere else I could possibly look.

Is there anyway to lure him out so I can get hope? I'm very down about this right now so any suggestion, if there is any to locate a snake.... =(. This is so disappointing.

Tony

You can never have only one snake!

If its a good eater;
Get a frozen mouse and thaw it out in a 1/2 cup of water, get a small piece of wood or something the snake can hide under and dip it in the water. Then put it in a wrinkled up paper sack wraped around the wood, leave the end open just a little bit.
You now have a hide for the snake that he will wait in, looking for its next meal to show up.
Worked for me!

Aww...I'm sorry to hear that your beautiful little knob escaped. But if he is still in your room there is a very good chance you will find him. What rbichler suggested sounds good. They seem to like to get into tight places.

Best to get the the store ASAP and get enough glue traps to put around your place. Glue boards I think work best, bigger, lighter easier glue to remove the snake. Get enough to put in every corner and escape route. Once down, look at your records and see if it was in a shed cycle. Most times a snake that gets loose in shed cycle will find a spot and not move til it sheds out. If not in a cycle turn up the heat all the way, shut all the lights off and leave your place. If its there, not in the walls there is a good chance it will move and get caught within a hour. When you catch it in the glue DONT PEEL IT OUT! Pour vegatable oil on the glue and work it in til the glue breaks down, otherwise the snake will go into a shed cycle immediately from simple skin trauma. If you dont find it in a week move all the traps to the basement(or better yet do the basement now too!), they will move DOWN and be looking for moisture.... a wet towel on a basement floor is as good as tin in a field trust me!

Good advise Jeff,I have lost my share and have found most of them.Sometimes as much as 2 years later.Often my guys end up in a sink looking for water. My dogs have found a few for me unharmed.I have a locked door sealed snake room and that helps.I once found my neighbors escaped kingsnake in my basement looking to get at my milksnakes.

I wonder if a unrolled length of duct tape might work like a glue trap.

All good suggestions.

BTW, I have lost a few montane kings (pyro, ruthveni, thayeri) in the past and found each either in the same room or just outside the room, sometimes as long as 10 days after escape.

Each find was under something that was flat and had very little space under it. One was a folded towel, one was a t-shirt, one was a piece of drip paper I laid down when painting trim.

So keep your hopes up. I like the paper bag idea.

BTW, I lost a prize rosyboa once. Tore the room apart, nothing. About a week later, I find him in the baby rack behind a shoebox laying on the heat. Probably there most of the time. Sometimes the most obvious places we overlook.

sprinkle baby powder along the walls, if the snake crawls through it you'll be able to tell, then you'll know it's still around.

I once lost my zonata some months ago... she squirmed through a small part of the lid.... I found her within 2' of her enclosure behind a copy of Paradise Lost... behind the books on my shelf there is a 1 inch or so gap... that is where she was hanging out.... If you have books you may try looking there!

I had a knob escape once. I hope your case works out better than mine.

Did your patternless goini/meansi escape too?, then you came across the goini chowing down on the knob one day??

One of my boas got out and crawled in behind a rack pushing open 4 draws of knobs. I was able to find 2 right away and a 3rd didn't even know the draw was open as he hid under a water bowl. The fourth was loose about 3 days. He must have crawled across the goini cage and the 4 foot beast came right thru the screen top in pursuit of the 30" knob.. By the time I found them the knob was half eaten so I let the goini have the meal.

Oh, that is horrible!!!

My snake finders. So far no snakes have been harmed by these most efficient snake finders. The rattlesnake display fools the cats long enough for me to rescue the escapee in time. If I get an escapee I watch the cats. Works every time. If I can't find the escapee and have to go out of the cabin I put the cats out, too, so they don't have time to figure out the snake is harmless.
