Humidity

ardfarkl Dec 23, 2010 09:47 AM

My snakes have an entire room in my house. During the winter the humidity drops as we all know with heating elements. Has anyone ever put a humidifier in their snake area? Is it a good or bad idea? Just looking to improve my snakes well being.

Thanks!

I use an ultrasonic warm air humidifier in my snake room. I used to use a basic, filtered humidifier but it was just a PITA. I have found the extra cash for an ultrasonic humidifier is definitely worth it.

I get the humidity up to 50% or so in the room, then turn the humidifier down. Once the humidity gets up there it takes less water and power to maintain it. Since I switched to one of these humidifiers I've had no shedding problems with any of my snakes over the winter.

What is the difference between an ultrasonic and the other one. Cost? Why was the other a PITA, if the ultrasonic wasn't. Thanks Mike

Just curious. I live in Fl, humidity usually isn't an issue. I like to know how things work.

Many of the cheaper humidifiers come with a "filter" that also acts as a wick. It wicks up the moisture from the water in the bottom and the humidifier pulls air through it thus blowing out cool, moist air. Problems are numerous. Mold, finding the right size of filter, remembering to change the filter, cleaning lime scale off permanent filters, etc. Furthermore, many of these systems require the filter to already be moist when you start it in order to work properly. So every time you forget to refill it and the filter dried out, you would have to remove it, set it in water, and replace it wet. If you didn't do this the system will most likely just be an over priced fan for dry air, or, it will continue to partially wick moisture and dump it all over whatever surface you have it sitting on.

You see my complaints

The ultrasonic humidifiers basically just have an element or pan inside the system that vibrates super fast and disperses the energized water into the air. No filter necessary. These systems run $10-45 more expensive than the filtered systems depending on brand, size of room it will work for, whether it heats, and other such options.

If you are in the market, I recommend going to a couple local stores and seeing what they have. Then go home with those brand names and models and look up reviews of the products. There are a surprising number of lemons when it comes to this appliance so it pays to do your homework.

I live in Florida, I don't think you can find a humidifier in a store here. Very good explanation, thank you. I use radiator heaters, sometimes I just sit a pan on top of the heater. You just have to be careful not to bump it.

Something else that I have been curious about, what does Bolitochrome mean?
Curiosity killed the cat, it might get me one day too.

It's latin. Bolito = explode, Chroma or chromus = color or rainbow.

I got the name from the salamander Bolitoglossa. Glossa = tongue

Thanks Guys

This helps a lot. I did not want to do something stupid and waste money.

Watever Dec 24, 2010 06:32 AM

I do !

It's run at 50-55% then turn off by itself.

Still need to refill daily otherwise it's miss some water to keep it stable.
Didn't see any problem with it so far.
