Locality Cal King Parade!

shannon brown Dec 23, 2010 01:03 PM

Not sure I will get them all posted but I will give it a shot.In no order at all here are a some locale cal kings I am working with.

w/c hypo from Freeport CA.

w/c Barett Lake.

some babies from the aberrant Barett Lakes.

f1 ghost palomar

w/c Yumanensis from Brawley.

f1 Baret Lake

f1 carlsbad

f1 Borrego springs

w/c Slate Range (Panamint Valley)

f1 Yumanensis

w/c scissors Crossing

f3 San Felipe (Sipperly)

f5 scissors animal line bred for stripe width.

w/c Mono County (10 mins from my house)

w/c Deep Springs (hyw 168)

w/c carlsbad

w/c Clovis blackbellies.

clovis babies.

f2 Merker hypos and hets ( El Dorado county)

f1 Bishop animals (Inyo County)

f1 clutch of 9-mile animals extreme southern Inyo county (Owens Valley)

f1 Douglas County Oregon.

f1 ghost palomar

f3 or 4 Lemke line conjuncta.I really don't consider these locale cause we don't have any exact Data.

same with these "Natida"..

f1 Davis Black Bellies (Staubb line) A.K.A Delta Kings

probably the best I have ever caught.this female was about to be roadkill from 18 wheels about ten Mins from my house in Inyo County.

this was the first Blackbelly I ever found. He is a young adult now and should breed this year for me.The normal looking female just below him was found about ten feet away and was the same size.I have high hopes that she turns out to be het. These guys are from Near Mendota and thats all I am going to say.LOL....

this next pair are f1s from my good buddy Gary Keesler. He collected the spotted male and normal female in La Quinta close to palm springs.Turned out that the female was het or its a co-dom mutation cause the breed true and are the only real true aberrant desert phase I know of.

f6 from two stripers from Scissors.pretty cool and I wish I would have kept this one.

pretty cool half and half I produced last year out of my Barett Lakes animals.

w/c Rancho Santa Barbara

w/c Ramona

f1 Mud King from Marina Del Ray.black belly.

I have more but my fingers are tired.
Hope you enjoyed the little tour.

Awesome kings. And what variety cal kings have. I really like the yellow on that ramona speciman. Must be pretty entertaining finding wild cal kings. I need to move to where the snakes are. LOL

DMong Dec 23, 2010 02:46 PM

Man, you have some downright SMOKIN sh**t there bro!

Hard to like any ONE particular type from all that, but that killer super-wide stripe Scissors locale animal is just SICK!. And that wide banded one you wish you kept was extremely unique looking too man!

Yeah, some real nice locality stuff there Shannon, no doubt about it!

Man, I can tell alot of time and effort went into that cal king collection Shannon. Very nice and unique animals. I really dig those wide striped and dark bellied morphs.

Bigtattoo Dec 23, 2010 04:41 PM

What can I say that hasn't already been said. Just "sick"

That Staub line Davis black belly is a very different kind of king. I really like that.

Out of all of those I like the Wide Striped F5 Scissors Crossing animal.....I had one awesome male from Don Shores that was very similar....It seems that a wide striped female is very rare or harder to produce than the males.....

Here's my old male:

Shannon those are all very nice. I like the La Quinta locality. What a collection you have. The wide striped king is really cool. Best collection of Cal kings I've seen.

That wide band scissors. Is that true line bred from scissors only? or was it outbred to something else and bred back to get the wide stripe?

I guess i am asking if that is pure scissors?

It's amzing whatever it is. but even more amazing if it was kept as a pure scissors and just bred back for wide stripe.

Rainer, they where selectivly line bred for about 5 or 6 generations (Tim Turmezie) to get them that wide. And that super wide banded came out of that pair also.
Even my w/c striped animals don't always breed true.I get banded from time to time.Pretty cool if you ask me.

Rick Staub Dec 24, 2010 04:32 PM

Some sweet snakes there Shannon. If I may add to it, here are a couple other localities. Nothing real special but both have a different look to them, especially on their heads.

This is one I posted before from Mount Laguna. Found it about 10 ft from a zonata at over 5000 ft.

A friend gave me this one which he found in northeastern Arizona in the Painted Desert near St Johns. She has a narrow head and I like the all black neck.
