New here

Hello all we are new here and new to ball pythons as a rule, We have owned a few normals and have just purchased our first morph, a 2010 hatched spider male. We have decided that we would like to attempt to breed maybe next year and have done some limited research online about the process. Does anyone know of any good books that will help us through the process of setting up our breeding rack and just the process of breeding as a whole? We also would like to find some information on genetics. Were somewhat confused on how to calculate the punnet squares and what traits are dominant and what traits are recessive. If there is a site or a book out there that we could purchase any information would be helpful. We both have experience keeping various snakes and lizards but never breeding. Thank you all in advance for your help and have a Merry Christmas!

VPI has the best book (in my opinion) I just got it for christmas!!whoo hoo!

Kevin from NERD (newenglandreptile-dot-com) has a GREAT book too. I have read that one cover to cover and it is wonderful.

I have herd that Jon Berry has a good book. I have yet to get that one.

Websites=worldofballpythons-dot-com
youtube-dot-com=has helped me out a lot with building my own racks and incubator, as well as other little things that I didn't know that I wanted to know.(if that makes any sense).

AND-anyone in the ball python forum right here, just ask.

Good luck, Have fun, and Merry Christmas!

Yeah,NERDs site has a nice genetics section as well.

As far as the punnent squares are concerned...Just think of it like coin tosses(per egg)...As in say,heterozygous bred to heterozygous is two coin tosses...and a pastel(or a het)bred to a normal equals one coin toss,(since the normal is essentially a two headed coin).
So if you were to breed a bumblebee(pastel/spider) to a calico/lesser it would be four coin tosses..Which would require four consecutive "tails" per egg to produce a hatchling that has all four of the desired traits of both parents.Conversely it would be the same odds to produce a normal from these parents as well.

Good luck and welcome to the hobby.

Welcome!
The NERD book is a very good book for the beginner. It has a section on genetics that you might find very helpful.
Also, check this link for genetics: http://www.worldofballpythons.com/wizard/
It'll help you pick any possible combinations and find out what the outcome will be
