I just put my female with my male, for the first time!

kurma Sep 27, 2003 02:26 AM

Well I've been weighing th female alor over the past two weeks she hit 19 grams todday, so I fed her and put her with the male. I was hoping I'd see copulation right away but I guess the male has to work his magic. They checked eahc other out while the male pretty much over her and rattling his tail, she seems receptive but I'll leave them alone and be hopeful.

First off, the breeding season is pretty much over if you're not manipulating temperatures, lighting, or other factors to induce breeding off season. Second, you don't want a gecko that small to get gravid; it could be disastrous. If it were normal breeding season, she could start producing eggs and as they do that, many will lose weight. At 19g, she doesn't have much to lose, and doesn't have much to put into the eggs, so you may end up with a super unhealthy mom and infertile eggs. I'd keep them separate until next year, see how big she is, and only start breeding if she's up to 40g or more. She and the babies will be much better off for it.

Good luck

I agree with every thing that Rob said. I cannot stress to you how bad it is to breed a female at that weight. I understand that you are anxious to breed your geckos, but you must let your females reach 40 grams before copulation for the good of her and her offspring. For now take out the male asap. Feed her as much as she can eat, and provide calcium powder and multi-vitamins at all times. Sorry for the lecture, but good luck just the same. Please let us know if you have any questions or run into problems.

she is 49 grams sorry male is 61 grams, now about the breeding season why would it matter? I mean so many breeders out there and I knwo they don't all breed at the smae time so if the females have are liek F60 and been so logn since the WC adults would tehy still have that in them breed in the spring? I've heard that they don't have to go threw a burmation so if that true what makes them start creating eggs before they see a male?

I figured you had a typo, lol!

Anyways, leos will pretty much breed anytime of the year, as long as the female is ready and releasing her pheromones the male will get the job done. Some people do beleive that your females will be more productive if put through a cooldown first, but I have not noticed any difference husfar.G

Good luck with your eggs.
