Reply for Katt about Russian rats

Marcel Poots Sep 27, 2003 03:47 AM

Katt,

Russians have always been my favorite of all snakes. They even beat the temperament of a corn like Steve says. I also have to agree with Steve about the temps. I keep mine at room temp (read no heating) and they do just fine. In Februari when I warm them up from hibernation I used to warm their cage but I turn it off in April. They eat in March - July and after that they will not eat for me again. In the months they do eat you would not go with your hands in the cage since they will eat anything and think anything is eatable. Mine are very docile and very large. As a matter of fact I am about to pick up a two and half year female tomorrow.

I just got into this species and they are great. Here's an albino form (sorry, he's in the blue - more pics after he sheds)

Tom remember that the albino form is schrencki anomala, a different subspecies, which some even think of as a different species

Most of all the Korean rat are not as laidback as Russians. I love their looks though..

Yes, and I would always keep the subspecies bloodline pure, but when I see posts for either Elaphe schrencki schrencki or Elaphe schrencki anomala, I'm quick to share my excitement about them ( :

PS
Terry, thank you for the information about these guys from 9/14.

How do you get them so FAT??????? Mine eat like horses & still never seem to get the kind of weight on like your has, maybe I should just turn the heat off completely!!!!

They do not fill out untill they are 5 or 6 years old. Untill then they are very slender snakes. I don't know why he is so big too since he eats only a few weeks a year. My new female is just over 4' and as thick as a middle finger.

1. One is about where they are from. The southern part of the range produces more robust specimens, imo.

2. The second thing is that they are adapted to hibernate more than six months of the year. I give mine between four and five months brumation, but that still means they are stretching one growing season over more months than they're used to. Growth slows in the early fall.

NOTE: Marcel...how long does your male brumate? You said he only eats a few weeks each year. Does he stay active w/o eating for months at a time?

Terry,

I hibernate him for three months. He only eats in April to end of July. In that time he eats adult rats every week.

Great pics!!

Oh, that albino Korean is real neat. I kick myself for not having picked up a pair when I had a chance to. Argh!!

I hope to see more of these in the hobby. They're quite nice.
