New Cage- Qs

zimbabwepegasus Dec 28, 2010 11:26 AM

Hi guys,

I just picked a 48x24x18 Showcase cage for my snakey and have some questions about what exactly I'll be happiest putting in it.
Cage Specs are at:
http://www.showcasecages.com/cage_details.htm

Questions

Heating:
Dave, are you the only one using the radiant heat panel or is everyone now a convert?

Substrate:
ok, for those of you who have some kind of bark/dirt/moss event... how much of a pain is it and how often do you guys generally find yourselves cleaning out the entire cage?

For my lizards I used tiles and found them to be wonderfully easy to clean and able to hold heat really well- has anyone tried this with a rainbow? Or does anyone have strong opinions on the subject?

Thanks guys!

- Kerry

Hi Kerry,

Not sure how many have "converted" but I do love my RHP's. I do still have cages and all my tubs with heat tape and it does work fine. In my wood breeding cages RHP's are by far the best option.

As you know, I have a lot of snakes and keep them all on paper. My concerns with any substrate is knowing how much these animals secrete and excrete. I could see the substrate becoming ripe before you knew it.

I do have experience with moss hides and they get dirty quite often and in feeding mode need to be replaced every week or two. Once gravid and not eating, the moss can and does last for months - no eat, no urates or poop to clean up. Right now I have all my hides lined with paper since the adult BRB's are still eating and therefore leaving me messes to clean fairly often.

BTW, how's my baby doing? At two years old she should have some decent size and showing her ultimate colors.

Ha!
I'm not on my own computer right now (house sitting), so I'll have to get some pics up later this week. I know I've been totally delinquent on that front.

She's gorgeous. Bright reds. Not as striking distinctions as Hook, more like Molly, but she's a beauty. And really sweet as pie. I don't even know how I'd startle her into striking.
I tend to let new snake handlers have her before I let them near my corns, her movements are a little chiller and she's not as likely to get the idea that everything that moves must be food as one of my corns.

Thanks guys!
