New to the site. My BP.

Ali_Cat Dec 28, 2010 11:54 AM

Hello,

Names Alisha, but Ali works fine. I`m fairly new. My good friends from Acadiana Reptile Company refered me to this site, and I must say I`m most excited.

Anyhow,
Here is my 3mo old normal male BP, Monty.
Was at my friends house,(Wendy and Charles Triche)the same people who refered me to this site, for a nice christmas dinner and gift exchange when they supprised me with this little guy. Hatched him themselves. I`m incredibly happy with him, what a great Xmas gift eh?

The lamp is not for heating, only used it to take the pics.

Ali,
I agree it is a nice Xmas gift, you have good friends. I thought from the picture in your hand that he looked large for being 3 months old, but the picture in the tank looks to be about the right size for the age. Maybe you have small hands?
Anyway welcome, and have fun.
Mike

Is that aspen shavings or pine shavings in there? If pine, take it out and switch to either aspen shavings, cypress mulch, paper towel or newspaper. Pine can be toxic to snakes.

You have a nice looking snake and it looks a good size for its age. However I Have a few other suggestions for your setup. First, I assume you have an undertank heater for a hot spot, since you don't use that lamp for heat. I would add a second hide, for the other end of the tank (not sure if its the cool or warm end, as I don't know which end you have designated the warm side). Also, switch out the water bowl for something with a wider base. It wouldn't take much for a snake to flip that metal dish. I find for small ball pythons, a plastic cat food or water dish found at a dollar works good. They are also hide enough you can bury them in the shavings so they are flat against the bottom of the cage and still be high enough not to have shavings fall in. However in your tank, with such a thick layer of shavings, its not going to work, unless you reduce the thickness of shavings to about 1-2 inches.

Its Aspen, not pine. Yes, I am using an UTH And I`ve reduced his shavings to about 1in in the 'hot spot'. His bowl is pretty deep, and sits on the bottom of his tank with the shavings 3/4 of the way up the bowl, so tipping won`t be a problem. I`ll be getting him another hidey eventually, I`m not too worried about it, its not a necessity. Today I`m getting some nice wood fixtures for his tank =]
