My Brumation Chamber Got Too Cold...

pyromaniac Dec 30, 2010 12:42 PM

...at least in my judgment, wanting to get down in the low 40's F and stay there. Last night was the last straw; outdoors it got down in the teens and I had to uncover all my brumation tubs in my bedroom to let the ambient cabin air in, but that still did not really help as much as I would have liked. So this morning I put everybody back in their regular cages with the heaters off, and draped covers over the cages to make it dark. Last winter was plenty warm and I had brumation temps in the low 50's pretty consistently. The pyros could have probably done okay with low 40's but the poor bulls; I got worried about those guys. Everybody is okay, though. During the day the unheated cages may get into the low 60's. The baby pyros and a pair of young gopher snakes have localized heat because they still eat.

My adult toads are on the floor in the living room and the soil in their big tub stays in the low 50's. Because heat rises my crickets are still breeding and doing great, up on high shelves.

I will be so glad when it is spring and I don't have to mess with firewood anymore! I would move to Hawaii except snakes aren't allowed there.

Sorry to hear Bob. After several weeks of sub 20 temps here and more snow than I care for today I woke to 59* and the rain has all but washed the snow away.

Hope you can keep everyone warm enough.

Happy New Year.

You live in the Midwest, right? I lived in Michigan for a decade (near South Haven) but the weather just did me in, and on top of that there were no mountains to make having the snow worthwhile!

One other OT thing I forgot to mention. My wife's hairless rats had their first babies yesterday. She's a good momma and is taking real good care of them. I'll try to get some pics for you.

I sold my rats when the babies were about 10 days old. The mama got real mean about protecting them, understandable, but I did not feel like keeping a critter that would not hesitate to bite me. I guess I am spoiled by my gentle little mice; I can reach into the nest and take young without ever getting bit by the parents. With this mama rat I had to fend her off with a cardboard shield!
