The Last Snake of the Year

tspuckler Dec 31, 2010 02:01 PM

The high temperatures for most of the month of December in the Greater Cleveland area have been in the 20s. Today we had an unseasonably warm day with temperatures in the 50s. It was my final chance to do so field herping in 2010. I went to the Cuyahoga Valley. Here's what the Cuyahoga River looks like today:

I was walking on a trail and I saw this climbing over a snow bank:

The snake, a DeKay's Snake (aka Northern Brown Snake) looked (and felt) a bit cold, so I let it warm up a bit before sending it on its way.

Happy New Year everyone!

Not a snake but this little guy is so small it had to have hatched this week! Today was a warm day, but we have had some record low nights the past few weeks. Temps went as low as the high 20's. To think that any reptile egg could survive and then hatch is pretty remarkable.
