Getting rid of mites and other ?'s

TonyT89 Dec 31, 2010 06:56 PM

I thought I was able to get rid of mites by drowning my kritter keeper completely or having it submerged in water for 20 minutes. During that time I left my Alterna in a container filled halfway with lukewarm water.

It seems that the mites are still there and I made sure to clean everything such as the water dish the hide spot and the lid with zoomed wipeout but I guess it didn't work. I heard commercial products do not work but I heard some things about provent a mite. Has anyone used this with success?

I was also wondering if my Alterna has mites, could that be the reason why he isn't eating or could it be the mites issue and another issue? My other Alterna had pseudomonas so it could possibly be contagious which by the way he is on antibiotics right now and I inject the antibiotics in him every 3 days. The snake with mites also has some weird looking film or mucous in its water dish so maybe a respiratory as well? I've never had problems like this ever keeping kingsnakes until the last 3 months and it's really stressful. The snake with mites was eating very well until he shed and since then has not been eating even after shed. I saw little black dots jumping around so I assume he is not eating due to the blood sucking cretins. I've already sent 2 snakes to the vet and spent so much money but if I bring one more snake then that will bring me to my doom! The snake with mites is the picture I posted. I don't know what to do. If I have blood tests run then that is expensive too and he is not pooping so I can't run a fecal exam. Any thoughts anyone?

I haven't had a mite problem in decades but I don't think they jump. If it is mites that can effect the snakes appetite, but it could also be the season. My Alterna have almost stopped eating. They take a small meal every couple weeks. They have good weight on them so I'm not worried. If you do have other things like parasites then that is a problem because they are being fed upon and not taking in sustinace. I remember some other posts from some experienced keepers here that said Lice spray is basically the same as the mite stuff. Good Luck, and I'm sure others will chime in too!
