Christmas Balls

Vegas_Justin Jan 02, 2011 12:38 PM

My Brother and I got a Ball Python from our Mother and Father for Christmas. We are very happy and have fed it twice (frozen thawed) since we received it so we know it's a good eater.

Here are a few pics of him. Just for a little challenge, can you tell us what morph it is from the pictures?

Good Luck,

Justin

Yes he is a Yellow Belly, but how can you tell that he is not a normal?

When you are associated with ball pythons for as long as most of us, you see a LOT of normals. Looking for "the next new morph" comes from scrutinizing MANY normals. When one becomes obsessed (lets call it what it really is here..lol) with looking for ANY "uncommon" markings in normals, you really need to know what they already are or aren't. That is why we make it our business to know what a yellowbelly looks like. I have even been able to pick out possible het ghosts because of a slight "glow" that normals do not typically have. The ones that "look" normal to ME are Specials, Specters, Thunders, Lightnings, Vanillas...because I don't look at them every day. If I was able to afford one, I would be studying the "look" of them and determining what traits make them look just a wee bit different from a "typical" normal.

Yellowbellys have slight yellowish, orangish blushing coming up from the belly in between the saddles (the tannish, brownish part of the pattern on the ball). The underneath where the sides of the snake meet the belly has an indian corn look to it, almost like a digital picture enhanced a thousand times to make it look pixelated. There is also an over all darker "look" to Yellowbellies you would noticed if placed nest to a normal. Now there are a LOT of dark normals too, but yellowbellies have a VERY slight "different" darker look than a regular darker looking normal. (if that makes any sense..lol) Basically, if someone put a Yellowbelly next to a dark, or darker than usual normal, I would still be able to tell which was the yellowbelly without even looking at the belly or sides.
I hope this helped a little.

Yes, you are right, he is a Yellow Belly, but how can you tell this and not mistake him for a normal?

Yes, he is a Yellow Belly and weighs in at 450 grams right now. How can you tell that he is a Yellow Belly though, what are your indicators?

Thank you,

Justin

Ive seen Ivory producing Yellow Bellies that look normal, and I've seen Normals that look like Yellow Bellies.

Very subtle morph.

If you bought it as a Normal, id say you probably just have a normal on your hands, a pretty one.

It does look similar to a Yellow Belly.

But only one true way to find out!

Yes, he was purchased as a yellow belly from a local breeder. I wanted to see what you guys thought it was. How can you really tell that it's a yellow belly since it looks so much like a normal?

I can see it in the colors, but a sure way to tell is the white highlight around the black pattern and the blushing on the side of the belly. Nice looking boy!
