50/50 Cali female ...

OZZZ Jan 03, 2011 08:31 PM

She was out and about so I thought Ild snap some pics. This is exactly what I love about kings.... she sees me messing around at the front of the cage and comes all the way across face first checking me out to see whats going on and whether or not theres any food in it for her lol.

I'm liking that cage arrangement very much.

Very neat yet uncluttered tank setup!! There are times I wish I had less snakes and more attractive caging than rack systems!!

OZZZ Jan 03, 2011 09:36 PM

..... those rocks that are used in the cage actually were collected on my trip from the rockie mountains in colorado so its kind of neat. I grabbed the rocks as a bit of a souvenir and didnt know what I was going to use them for so they came in handy.

Theres a bit of a cave underneath the rocks off to the left and a heat pad is underneath the tank on that side. She usually is hanging out underneath there but has been roaming all day... must be feeding time I guess.. lol.

have a bunch of animals and did the whole rack system/breeding thing. This time around I decided to go with a single animal in a dispaly cage. Im planning on buying a 48" showcase cage and stand once shes big enough so this cage is a temporary fix. I have went back and forth and have been thinking about getting an eastern chain instead. If Im only going to have ONE animal, and I am set on a king .. then I kind of would like it to be a bit larger, more impressive and easterns are the ticket there for me (or brooksi but I like easterns better).

Ive been going back and forth trying to decide... as this cali has her own charm.

We will see ... I might end up just keeping her ... or may end up with an eastern. Im not sure as of now.

That is a very nice cage set up indeed! I've had quite a few natural set ups in my day for all kinds of critters, but cleaning time was a real pain in the butt! That doesn't look to difficult though just remove the rocks clean the tank replace the chips. Nice snake too by the way. I like the perfect banding on that one Ozzz!

Thats a perfect looking 50/50. I like yours a lot better than the other 50/50's that are slightly aberrant.

Very clean patterned snake! My Alternas do that as well!

I couldn't help but to ask you, what kind of bedding is that? Looks so much like desert and maybe my Alterna would appreciate something like that....if it is safe for them.

You can never have only one snake!

Tony, hopefully OZZ will respond, but that looks like cypress mulch that you can find for a couple bucks a bag at Home Depot, etc. Its not bad and I use it in my tortoises cages when I bring them in for the winter. Its usually moist when the bag is first opened, but dries quickly. Also very mildew resistent.

OZZZ Jan 04, 2011 10:34 AM

It is cypress mulch .... a few bucks for a 2 cubic foot bag. She seems to like it and is still able to borrow in it, although not as easily as aspen or what not but she still manages too.

Availability is regional. Here I can get tons of it; when Iw as in CO, it was scarce as hens teeth.
Eculyptas (sp) may work and it's more widely available. I ahven't tried it though

I would be extremely cautious with eucolyptus (sp?) for the same reason as cedar bedding. The aromatic oils in the eucolyptus may be noxious to the snakes.

Damn I didn't know it was an aromatic wood. I'm looking for a replacement for cypress for if I move back up north where it isn't available regularly. I'm applying for some jobs in Montana...*crosses fingers*

I didn't know they made Cal kings that perfect! What a beauty.

I had a male for 20 yrs that had perfect rings from neck to tail, but not 50-50 like yours. Not one of his many offspring had perfect bands, though I did get a bunch with only a single imperfect band.
