Genetics of Whitesided & Calic Rats

actioncritter Jan 04, 2011 11:30 AM

I am looking to get a white-sided Black Rat to add to the collection. I already have a pair of amel black rats of breedable size. Was wondering the genetics behind the white-sided rats. If bred to the amel would I get?

Also, what are the genetics behind the calicos? Would there be any benefit to breeding one of those with a amel or white-sided? I haven't seen any amel X Calico or white-sided X Amel. Just wondering what might be produced.

Thanks!

Your first breeding would be double hets for albino and white side. If two of these offspring are then bred together you will get a few albino white sides wich are pretty cool. I have seen them but never owned one.
The calico gene is still fairly new and I am not sure it has been bered into other morphs yet, or at least I have not seen it. You can bet if I had one I would be doing it. I can forsee albino calicos, white sided calico in the future. You can bet someone will do it so it migt as well be you.

Good luck with them

Gotta say, I think Calicos are about as good as it gets. Hard to beat it.

I agree. Everytime I see the adds for them by Extraordinary Ectotherms in the classifieds I think about getting a pair. Very cool looking.
