It's perfectly normal for your salamander to hide in his log. My Fires sometimes wonder about during the day, but usually they're more active at night. What are you feeding him? Crickets are a good source of food for him. Dust them about every third feeding or so and they're good to go. Your sallie's hunting skills will kick in and all you migt see are less crickets. I hardly ever see mine eating, especially during the day like I've said.

fire salamanders like most love to hide mine come out rarely they prefer to hide in the wood area.I have found to that giving a choice fire salamanders seem to prefer wood to hide in over rock caves.Maybe its just my own.
Either way they loove to hide and keep them very cool.mist them to and when you clean the tank clean the wood with HOT water MAKE Sure ofcourse salamanders isnt in it.Wood will develop mold but if cleaned(just rinsed) with HOt water once aweek its fine.

put food in tank but out of his reach, and he may not go for it right away, but he'll get around to it. tank has lid so food won't escape?
