Getting Started

grafke07 Jan 06, 2011 03:38 AM

Hello all,
Im currently overseas and will be finishing my tour around June. With that said i plan on getting into the breeding project as soon as i get back. Im just asking what people would recommend to get started such as morphs, racks, and just plain getting started...lol.. I Have a normal female already and im willing to invest a decent amount of money to get started but it seems hard to find anyone offering females that are able to breed besides normals. If anyone would be willing to help me i would greatly appreciate it!!!

Thanks so much
Josh

Talk to Outback reptiles. They are replacing all their single morph females with doubles and combos, so they were selling female pastels and cinnies and stuff.

Most breeders do not sell ready to breed female morphs or high end hets.Stop and think what the value of a breeding female is and why would a breeder bother to raise it to sell.If you want to jump into the breeding game without raising your own stock buy whole collections when someone is selling out.

in this market, it's also hard to find some who will pay you a reasonable price. i ran into someone last year who was looking for full grown albino hets - first i said, sorry, i cant help you... then one week when i was looking to make space i offered up a 3,000 gram female, and he wanted to give me $500, citing ads he's seen - nothing 3000 grams though.

this gal consistently gives me 8-10 eggs, gorgeous albinos, and i'm going to let her go for $500? nope, i'll create cinny albinos instead.

the reality of buyers who are looking and those who take the time to raise up these solid ready to go breeders is often too wide a gap to bridge a deal.

not saying that you are like that and i do hope you find what you are looking for. you might try just calling the really big breeders - vpi, nerd, etc... they might have enough turn over to find you something. i've called ralph in the past for breeders ready to go, and he's entertained the idea but you have to meet his price. i just bought a full grown high end morph breeder from pete kahl - again you gotta meet his price. but i think it's worth just cold calling (or emailing) the folks with a lot of stock.

Thanks everyone for the advice on finding Older females. I think im looking to get the basic morphs in males...like spider/pin/mojave....hopefully i get one female of a basic morph...then about 8-10 reg females...this is just hopes i will probably take what i can find for a reasonable price with out me spending my hole budget on 1 female but also meeting the price...i understand its a buisness and people dont want to lose money.

If you go with animal plastics for your racks which seems to get most approval on the boards from what I saw make sure to order them before you get back. It's about 4 weeks from order til shipment. I get my 1st rack tomorrow. the wait has sucked but I'm sure it will be worth it.

I picked out my favorite morphs and combos and figured out all the options of what I could breed them too. I also decided that I would mostly go with babies and raise them up, (since thats what you typically find anyway). So far it's going well. I won't be able to breed until this coming year where I'll only have a het albino/albino pair. The most important thing... is to have fun
