New rules banning the sale and ownership of exotic pets could put an end to Ohio’s wild history of regulatory gaps.

The promised rules are the result of an agreement Gov. Ted Strickland brokered between the Humane Society of the United States and farm groups to keep an animal welfare initiative off the November ballot. The rules will grandfather current pets but they won’t allow replacement or breeding.

Strickland’s agreement indicates animals banned will at least include “big cats, bears, primates, large constricting and venomous snakes and alligators and crocodiles.”

In the Miami Valley, runaway or out-of-control beasts created a second career for now retired Oakwood police officer Tim Harrison. A documentary on his exploits corralling cougars, hyenas, snakes, reptiles and bears, titled “The Elephant in the Living Room,” was released this year and will be shown at The Neon in Dayton the first week of October.

Harrison, 54, of Springboro said the subculture of exotic animal ownership has been fueled by reality television and naive people with illusions they can control dangerous animals, creating a deadly situation in Ohio. “You can buy a cobra, but you can’t buy common sense,” he said.

Anybody have something more specific?

In some counties the term "Large constricting snake" may refer to a Cornsnake. And who is defining venomous?

IDK I think people should have to be certified to own certain animals any ways. Possibly even for venomous reptiles because of public servants like fire fighters. Would suck running into a house on fire only to get bitten by a Gaboon Viper or better yet an Inland Taipan unknowingly. lol.
Large constrictors like burms should be micro-chipped and filed in order to pursue negligent owners who release to the wild or "lose" them.

Honestly people should just mind there own business.

Then take your reptiles to the Governon and surrender them to him in person. That's a campaign worth trying.

wow that sucks i feel for you guys in ohio! is the ban even on ball pythons?

garweft Jan 07, 2011 09:49 AM

It's pretty vague and depends on what you'd consider a large constricting snake. Burms are for sure included, balls most likely not, boas....??

It's only a temporary 90 day order so who knows what's going to happen. I'm just wondering since it's the middle of breeding season where would you go to get a boa abortion??

I'm guessing/hoping some group is working on filing an injunction and getting the executive order stopped.

Either way it's sad that an elected official would give into demands from special interest groups because they threaten to bring issues with animal use and farming to ballot. Nothing like your state being run by "men" with no backbone.

No, I hadn't heard about the highway through the park. Expect an increase in poaching and a decrease in Elephant populations.

Am I surprised that China is willing to drive over some animals to get minerals? Not even close to being surprised.

Have you seen the atrocities that go on in Sudan? China has gladly turned a blind eye to this human suffering for the sake of acquiring resources to sustain their current level of growth and plan for the future.

Consider what the Chinese government does to their OWN PEOPLE, and than ask yourself how much compassion and respect they would have for FOREIGN ANIMALS??

Shark fins, tiger paws, and elephant tusks, bear gallbladders,......... when will the demand for THOSE 'resources'* ever end??

It's like the natural world is a pantry, eh? f....ck

i agree with you but its also all the people who just let there pets go that has caused this but in the same these are not bad and dangerous animals the only thing dangerous is the gov.

WALL2WALLREPTILE Jan 07, 2011 05:24 PM

The whole idea of people releasing their pets...is a fabrication.

The feral Burmese Pythons in Florida were not caused by irresponsible pet owners releasing their unmanageable pets. That whole concept was a creation of the animal rights extremists. This propaganda was part of their campaign to give pet owners a black eye.

The origin of the Burmese Python population has been scientifically confirmed.
With the aid of the information (garnered from in USFWS Records, CITES Import Paperwork and DNA evidence), the population of feral Burmese Pythons in Florida was shown to have been caused by a natural disaster. The damage caused from Hurricane Andrew to an import facility is the origin of the Burmese Python population.
Before anyone starts casting any blame toward importers...we must consider that similar damage could have easily happened to a zoological exhibit, scientific research facility or animal rescue sanctuary.

It is interesting to note that we see little more than lies, finger pointing, and insane proposals for economically devastating legislation from the animal extremists.
I have not seen them working on REAL solutions to the existing problem in Florida.
Come to think of it...I believe it was individuals from the reptile industry who really stepped up to address the situation. People like Greg Graziani, Michael Cole and Sean Heflick were the citizens on the front lines in Florida.
Dave and Tracy Barker published an incredible amount of information to help educate people about the FACTS.
The information they provided should be what is used to create real solutions to the problem in Florida....not the rubbish that Rodda and Reed invented.
Each State should be able to make logical decisions about what is needed to protect their environment, based on ACTUAL climate conditions....rather than crazy predictions.
What is happening in Ohio is a shame. It is corruption, plain and simple.

the humane society is the most crocked company out there their only in it for the money and lobbiest the florida mishap is bad but not all was caused by bad pet owners the natural disasters did cause it but it all comes down to the bad politicians we have running this world and the problem in africa is just the sorriest thing i have heard off people dont care about animals today its all about the quick dollar they can make this is sorry

TessadasExotics Jan 07, 2011 08:02 PM

I am sure that some of the Burmese populations in Florida are due to Hurricane Andrew, as you stated; but saying that all of the established populations of Burms are is false. To make the statement that none of the Florida Burms are from careless or ignorant owners is grossly incorrect. There are many reckless and ignorant owners who have released non-native species, such as Burms, in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Not only ruining things for Herp owners everywhere; but the environment alike.

Facts:
a. Hurricane Andrew happened On Aug. 24, 1992.
b. Burmese pythons have been reported from the saline glades and mangroves at the south end of Everglades National Park since at least the 1980s

Florida Fish and Wildlife-Burmese Python - Python molurus bivittatus

Hurricane Andrew

There are many other species of reptiles that are living in Florida due to accidents or irresponsible peoples.

Also:
Nonnative Florida Reptiles

I of course am all for people owning reptiles (or any animal), but I do think that we have to provide stricter laws for those who are negligent. I don't think its anyone's decision to say whether I, nor any one else, can own a Tiger, Bear or Burm.

Morphine Jan 07, 2011 10:32 PM

I'm pretty sure they kill/injure more people in Ohio than the "banned" animals do in the entire country combined.

jdcobra Jan 07, 2011 10:45 PM

they worry to much on these things that may our maynot be a big deal as of now but they are not really putting the effert in to help all these people out of jobs homes etc.

garweft Jan 07, 2011 06:45 PM

If this sticks it has laid the path for the same thing in every state. Simply threaten widespread legislation in order to scare politicians into giving you want you want.... Political terrorism.

TessadasExotics Jan 07, 2011 08:04 PM

There are only a hand full of states that do not have some type of laws already in place.
