Ohio Exotics Ban

Bolitochrome Jan 09, 2011 11:10 AM

Legitimate questions:

Who is supposed to be *enforcing* this law? And who decides where the animals go? Are they all supposed to be euthanized, or will they be doled out to Zoos and Sanctuaries?

Aren't some of the animals listed a bit general? For instance, "Large constricting snakes". Who defines "large" for the purpose of enforcement? The issue is the same for "big cats".
Or "Crocodiles". Do they mean the Genus or the Order?

I don't mean this to be a rant against the legislation, even though I certainly am. I am actually genuinely curious about the answers to these questions.

It will be enforced by officers commissioned as Wildlife Officers by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Wildlife.
It is an emergency executive order that is only effective for 90 days ending March 6.
People concerned with this ban should contact Gov.-elect John Kasich who is the incoming official.

The actual Executive Order is 2010 -17s

Executive Order-17S

It is rather vague and can be left to a wide range of interpretation as it is written.

So it is up to the "Wildlife Officers" to determine which species are on this list and which aren't?

there will probably be a list made up....
large cats will probably include even smaller stuff like bobcats and lynx ,caracal(spell) ,ocelot, and crosses thereof etc etc

large snakes will probably include boas...to them,,,boa is a boa...not redtail ,true redtail or subspecies...boa...period...

pythons....they'll have to list them also....it may or may not say 4 foot 5 foot 6 foot? or the "potential" to reach a certain length....

lawmakers suck.......the more learned they are the more stupider they get.....(ask the management where I work.....college !...it does a body stupid...)LOL.....

....there will be a list....but don't bet they won't act on this before they tell you what's not legal...they can and will do as they wish and say-- oops sorry...later....after they kill your pets....

Here is a list of species that the temporary order includes. Of course if it's made permanent the list could change.

(1) Class mammalia, order carnivora:

(a) Family canidae: coyote (Canis latrans), timber and gray wolf (Canis lupus), excluding wolf-dog hybrids;

(b) Family felidae: lions (Panthera leo), tigers (Panthera tigris), jaguars (Panthera onca), leopard (Panthera pardus), clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), snow leopard (Panthera uncia), cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), bobcat (Rufus rufus), lynx (Lynx rufus), cougars, pumas, or mountain lions (Puma concolor), including hybrids thereof;

(c) Family ursidae: all species of bears.

(2) All species of Class mammilia, order primates excluding humans.

(3) Class reptilia:

(a) Order crocodylia: all species of alligators, crocodiles, caimans, and
gharials.

(b) Order squamata:

(i) Family atractaspidae: all species, such as mole vipers.

(ii) Family boidae: anaconda (Genus eunectes), Burmese python
(Python molurus), reticulated python (Python reticulatus),
amethystine python (Morelia amethistinus), scrub python
(Morelia kinghorni), northern African python (Python sebae),
southern African python (Python natalensis).

(iii) Family colubridae: boomslang (Dispholidus typus), twig snake (Genus thelotornis).

(iv) Family elapidae: all species, such as cobra, mamba, and coral snakes.

(v) Family hydrophiidae: all species, such as sea snakes.

(vi) Family viperidae: all species, such as rattlesnakes, pit vipers, and puff adders.

You can still own and breed Boas and Humans....

ed1 Jan 09, 2011 05:59 PM

I was going to ask about the human part.

Bolitochrome Jan 09, 2011 06:53 PM

All the members of the Genus Python and Genus Morelia are in the Family Pythonidae, not Boidae.

Probably won't influence the legislation at all, but still...just sayin'.
