brumation questions

johnthebaptist Jan 11, 2011 12:31 PM

In a previous thread i was discussing that my 2010 bairds girl had stopped eating. She had gone 20 days and then ate and then was on another 20 days. Tim from third eye which is who i got her from told me i should put her in brumation. I do not breed and have never put a snake in brumation. There is no food in her belly so i put her in a small tub with aspen and a hide and water bowl and found a spot that only reaches maybe 60 degrees in the day. its usually around 55 degrees. She has been there for 2 days and i will probably warm her up in mid February as suggested. Am i doing this right? Anything to watch for? Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. I am a bit worried about her.

Tims info was correct, and your conditions sound good. Make sure she stays between 50-60 and all should be OK with her not losing weight, etc. Do make sure she has water as they are active at these temps and can dehyrdate without water. Give her a check once or twice a week to make sure she is doing ok, not having repiratory issues, etc. If it looks like she is having problems (she shouldnt), then warm her back up. It sounds like things are in check and she should be AOK until mid-February.

She is a bit active. I am not sure if she is losing weight. It is the 27th of jan (16 days after i put her in brumation) Should i hold off until mid feb? what harm could come of warming her up early? Im really just worried about how active she has been. Temps reach about 60 tops during a warmer day but usually stay in the mid 50's with a drop at night.
