Well, the male wants to mate

varanid Jan 11, 2011 07:48 PM

Pulled my kings out just after new years. Kind of early but eh, they'd been down 2 months or so.
Well, last night the axanthic male was courting the WS female. He wanted to mate.

She tried to frigging eat him. Full on coil around the mid body, biting his head, trying to start swallowing. Damn lucky I was there. THey've been seperated for a bit...his head is sort of messed up but he seems mostly OK. She had him by the head and and started to work on getting a grip...his head was mostly in her jaws and he'd started to try to bite her (wasn't working too well for him).

Have fed the female 5-6 small mice (hopper sized). I'll give the male 2-3 days and try him on a few just to be safe. He doesn't seem to have any evident problems moving, he doesn't feel wrong when I picked him up, he's still active (prowling his cage, etc). That WS is on an eating spree; she's had a small rat and several small mice since being pulled out. And she'd still rather eat than mate The hypo he's with he's shown 0 interest in that I've seen (but she looks good and thick at least).

if her response to him is like that, I would put them together maybe 2 days after she eats (whenever you decide to put them together again). hopefully you'll have better luck when she's not as hungry.

Yeah, this is WAAAY early in the game still as you probably know. I would definitely wait at least a couple more weeks or better and feed her real well in the meantime. When she ovulates later on, she should instinctively calm down and be receptive to his advances.

Good thing you kept a close eye on them bro, as throwing them together and walking away can be asking for big trouble if BOTH are not good and ready..LOL!

BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if the male now loses interest in food either now that he got a wiff of the "bad girl"..LOL!

heh yeah.
I hibernated them together and planned to keep them together (seperating for feeding of course). I may wind up having to rethink that since he's already wanting to go and she's just not interested...and is more than willing to try to eat him if he presses his suit.
Oh well. Only the male's had a post hibernation shed at this point :-/ niether of the females has.

Yeah, all in due time..LOL!. It could very well take another shed or two for the female to be receptive.

Good luck with it!

Last night I flashed on maybe I should separate my pyro trios during the warm up, which I planned on having be about a month of warmer temps with lots of food. This warm up is planned for late February, so by late March I could possibly reunite everyone having had a spring fattening first, but not on each other! LOL!
In the wild the male could get away from the female if she was more interested in feeding than in mating, but in the confines of a cage he is trapped. From other accounts of snakes attacking each other, it seems the first weeks after brumation are the most dangerous. It may take longer than anticipated for the females to feel satiated enough to want to breed instead of eat.
Anyway, I do believe I will do the separation just to be on the safe side.
A hair raising story:

Thanks, Varanid, for mentioning this topic!

Pyros are one of the more gregarious kings. IMO you do best by cooling them together. And if you want to keep them together after that, that works well too. I've done it - pyros don't attack one another like getula can.

I agree, most mexicana and montane kings will not try to kill or eat one another, but I have had it happen once with a thayeri pair.......

I have had to separate getula many times....

Poor planning and procrastination on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

Thanks John and Mark for the reassurance! My pyros actually seem to be more content together than they were when they were separate, so I will leave them together and just offer food frequently.

Pyros seem to love the company of other pyros. They do great that way, will select mates on their own. Really neat snakes. So calm and seemingly curious.

You cooled them together in the same cage?

I did that with Cal kings, and even warmed them together. Never had one try to eat another.. until I separated them for awhile then re-introduced, then I saw it happen on occasion.

they were together in a sweater box(all I could fit intot he cooler). I then put them into the tub together too. They were going OK till he started courting.
