Lacie keepers?

Fabrizio13 Jan 15, 2011 12:17 PM

Is there any people on here that keep Lace Monitors? I've been completely astounded by the pictures. I was mostly wondering on what the temperment on the species is. Also, if anybody knows somebody who breeds them, I would love to know.

Thanks!
Jason

Hello
Frank Retes has bred this species as well as a fellow in Colorado.

Not sure if either are still producing Lace.
Perhaps FR will chime in.

I was reading on one of Tom Crutchfield's comments on facebook that he once had all three color patterns of the lace monitor. Man I wish he had bred them. It was probably along time ago though.

Very few keepers here in the US let alone breeders. They are out there but run atleast $2500 each. Also need a massive amount of space. They are not know for being very tolerant of humans without a good amount of work and a large amount of knowledge on monitors. It has been done.

I do agree amazing monitors just not for anyone without a lot of money, time, and knowledge.

Actually they are very tolerable. That is, they do not bite. The main problem is with males and their feeding response, They just happen to think everything is food until its proven to not be food, then they get all upset. hahahahahahaha

Females are so friggin sweet its insane. Totally different then males.

Also they are smaller then blackthroats, and waters by a lot.

A huge male is 5 1/2 to 6 feet, and females rarely get over five, but reproduce at 3 feet.

Back to the problem, the males have friggin giant teeth.

These are the grandparents to the ones I have now.

Thanks Frank! Great looking animals, I bet yours are very nice too. Do you reproduce them still? I have a few questions;

First, what is the usual clutch size for a female and how many clutches do they usually have a year?

Also, what all phases are there? I've only heard "Bell's phase" called by name, and if I'm not mistaking, its the phase where the bands are very broad. I've seen photos where the animal's bands are very narrow while young.

Thanks!
